Lahaina, Hawaii — A Hawaii resort security guard was killed in a brutal overnight attack last week, and authorities have arrested a 20-year-old former college swimmer in connection with the death. The suspect, identified by local reports as Legend Storer, allegedly attacked the guard while unclothed before fleeing the scene.
The victim, Michael Dyer, 63, was working an overnight security shift when the deadly incident occurred at a resort in Lahaina, according to police.
Security Guard Found Dead at Resort
The Maui Police Department said officers were called to a condominium resort on Lower Honoapiʻilani Road at approximately 5:31 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, after receiving a report of an unresponsive man.
Emergency medical personnel determined that Dyer had died at the scene from his injuries.
Investigators later reviewed surveillance footage and determined that an unclothed male had arrived at the location around 1:45 a.m. and allegedly attacked Dyer before running away.
Police said the suspect was later spotted wandering through the streets of Kahana with numerous abrasions and was taken to a hospital.
Investigators determined that the injured man was the same person captured in the surveillance footage.
Suspect Identified as Former College Swimmer
Authorities initially did not publicly identify the suspect, but local news organizations later identified him as Legend Storer, a 20-year-old Lahaina resident.
Online court records reviewed by media outlets reportedly match the charges announced by Maui police.
Storer was previously a member of the swim team at Concordia University Irvine in California, according to his former school profile. He has since transferred away from the university.
His school profile also states that he was a two-time winner of the Maui Interscholastic League in 2024, highlighting his background as a competitive swimmer before the allegations.
Investigators Examine Possible Weapon
Court records cited by local reports allege that Storer may have used a five-gallon water container during the attack.
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding the alleged assault or explained why the confrontation occurred.
A possible motive has not been established, leaving investigators with additional questions as the case moves through court. Storer is facing second-degree murder, burglary involving a dangerous instrument and indecent exposure.
He has pleaded not guilty to all charges, according to court records.
Victim’s Family Remembers 26-Year Marriage
Dyer’s family has described him as a beloved husband who was working the overnight shift when he was killed.A GoFundMe campaign was established to help support his widow, Joy Dyer, whom he had reportedly been married to for 26 years.
According to the family, the couple did not have children.
One of Joy’s former coworkers described Michael as the love of her life, underscoring the personal loss his death has created for those closest to him.
The family has been seeking financial support as they deal with funeral expenses and the aftermath of the unexpected tragedy.
Case Continues in Maui
Storer remains accused of serious crimes, but the allegations have not been proven in court. Investigators are continuing to examine surveillance footage, witness information and other evidence as prosecutors prepare the case.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed or whether investigators have determined what prompted the alleged attack.
For Dyer’s family, however, the case has already resulted in an unimaginable loss, with his widow now facing life without the husband she had spent more than two decades with.
