Ruskin, Florida — Two Florida sheriff’s deputies were hospitalized after being shot during a gunfight with an armed suspect near Tampa on Thursday, ending a violent chain of events that authorities say began with the alleged overnight captivity of the suspect’s former girlfriend.
According to Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister, the confrontation unfolded at an apartment complex in Ruskin, south of Tampa, after deputies responded to investigate a disturbing report from a woman who had escaped earlier that morning.
Officials said the suspect was killed during the exchange of gunfire after allegedly opening fire on deputies.
Woman Allegedly Held Captive Overnight
Sheriff Chronister said the investigation began Wednesday night when a woman reported that her ex-boyfriend arrived at her home, restrained her with zip ties and forced a sock into her mouth using tape.
According to the sheriff, the woman told investigators she was held at gunpoint throughout the night and at one point lost consciousness while the suspect allegedly threatened to kill her.
When she regained consciousness Thursday morning, she discovered she was no longer restrained.
Authorities said the suspect allowed her to leave, and she immediately went to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office to report what had happened.
Deputies Locate Suspect at Apartment Complex
After speaking with the woman, deputies responded to an apartment complex in Ruskin where investigators believed the suspect was located.
A deputy operating a drone reportedly observed the suspect walking toward a van parked in the lot.
As deputies moved in to take him into custody, authorities say the situation escalated rapidly.
According to Sheriff Chronister, the suspect punched through a vehicle window to gain a clearer line of sight before opening fire on deputies.
Two Deputies Wounded During Shootout
Officials said one deputy was shot in the face, while a second deputy was struck in the neck as he remained inside his patrol vehicle.
A third deputy immediately returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times and ending the threat. Emergency medical crews responded quickly, and both wounded deputies were airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Chronister said both deputies were conscious, speaking with medical staff and grateful to have survived the attack.

“The hand of God was with our deputies here today,” Chronister told reporters during a news conference.
Suspect Dies as Investigation Continues
Authorities identified the suspect only as a 34-year-old man. He was transported to a local hospital following the shooting, where he was later pronounced dead.
Officials have not yet released his identity pending additional investigative procedures.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other agencies are expected to assist in reviewing the deputy-involved shooting, which is standard procedure in incidents involving law enforcement use of deadly force.
Authorities have not released additional information about the suspect’s alleged relationship with the woman or whether he had any previous criminal history.
The investigation into both the reported captivity and the officer-involved shooting remains ongoing.
