Grand Junction, Colorado — A Colorado community is mourning the deaths of five 17-year-old friends after their vehicle plunged off a steep hillside late Saturday, leaving families devastated just as a new school year was beginning.
The teenagers, all from Grand Junction, were traveling along Lookout Lane when their vehicle veered from the roadway and crashed down the hillside. The tragedy has left families, classmates and community members struggling to process the loss of five young lives at once.
Vehicle Plunged Down Steep Hillside
According to authorities, the five teenagers were traveling together late Saturday when their vehicle left the roadway and went over the edge.
The Mesa County Coroner’s Office said all five victims died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Three of the teenagers, including the driver and front-seat passenger, were reportedly wearing seat belts. The other two were not restrained and were ejected from the vehicle during the crash.
Police have not publicly identified the driver or determined exactly why the vehicle left the road. Investigators are examining speed as a possible contributing factor.
Wreck Wasn’t Discovered Until Sunday Morning
The crash apparently went unnoticed for several hours.
The Grand Junction Police Department said emergency dispatchers received a 911 call at approximately 7:45 a.m. Sunday reporting that a vehicle may have gone over the edge of a cliff.
Police officers and firefighters responded to the area and discovered the wrecked vehicle down the steep hillside.
The coroner’s office has declined to publicly release the teenagers’ names because of its policy regarding minors. However, families and loved ones have identified the five boys within the Grand Junction community.
Families Identify the Five Teenagers
One of the victims was Braden Taylor, 17.
His grandfather, Calvin Wilken, confirmed the teenager’s death in an emotional social media post, describing Braden as his youngest grandson.
A fundraiser created for Braden’s parents said the family is now facing the devastating loss of their youngest son, along with unexpected funeral expenses.
The other four victims were identified by loved ones as Tristan Tucker, Titus Gould, William Simms and Tyler Martinez.
Tucker had reportedly been preparing to begin his senior year of high school, get his driver’s license and experience the milestones that come with turning 17. His family remembered him as someone “full of life, potential, and a free spirit.”
Support efforts have also been established for the families of the other teenagers as the community rallies around those grieving.
Community Struggles With Unimaginable Loss
The scale of the tragedy has been especially painful as students return to school.
Local business Modern Classic Motors shared verified donation information for all five families and acknowledged how heavily the deaths were affecting Grand Junction.
The business said its heart was broken for the five young lives lost and for their families and friends who must now face an unimaginable loss.
The Grand Junction Police Department also released a message of support, telling the community that officers were grieving alongside residents.
The department described the victims as neighbors, friends and family, emphasizing that the tragedy has affected the entire community.
Families Face Long Road of Grief
For the families, the crash has abruptly ended futures filled with plans, school milestones and hopes for adulthood.
Loved ones have shared memories of the teenagers while asking the community to support all five families during the difficult weeks ahead.
Funeral expenses and other unexpected costs have added another burden as parents and relatives attempt to cope with their losses.
