Best Buy Announces New Small-Format Stores as It Tries to Reach Millions of Customers Left Without Nearby Locations

Jonesboro, Arkansas — Best Buy is taking a new approach to expanding its footprint across the United States by opening smaller-format stores designed to serve communities where a traditional large location may not be practical. Company leaders believe the strategy will allow the electronics retailer to reach more customers while adapting to changing shopping habits and market demand.

The first of these new compact locations recently opened in Jonesboro, Arkansas, marking what executives say could become an important part of Best Buy’s future growth plans.

Best Buy Introduces Smaller Store Concept

According to the company, the new stores are significantly smaller than its traditional locations.

While many standard Best Buy stores range between 30,000 and 35,000 square feet, the new compact format measures approximately 12,000 to 15,000 square feet, allowing the retailer to enter markets that previously could not support a full-sized store.

Incoming CEO Jason Bonfig said the company has identified communities where customer demand exists even though a larger store would not be economically viable.

Using the newly opened Jonesboro location as an example, Bonfig said the city represents a growing market where shoppers are interested in the Best Buy brand but do not require a massive retail space.

He added that the smaller format still provides enough room to offer products across the company’s major categories while better matching local demand.

Expansion Includes New Massachusetts Store

In addition to the Arkansas location, Best Buy also opened a 28,000-square-foot store in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, another example of tailoring store size to individual markets.

Bonfig described the approach as placing the right-sized store in the right location, rather than relying on a single store format nationwide.

Company executives say the flexible strategy allows Best Buy to expand into communities that may have previously been overlooked because of space or economic limitations.

New Strategy Comes as Company Faces Market Challenges

Best Buy’s expansion effort comes during a period of broader business changes.

Over the past several years, the company’s stock price has declined significantly, falling from nearly $140 per share in 2021 to around $85 more recently.

Despite those challenges, Best Buy reported encouraging financial results during its latest earnings report.

During the company’s May earnings call, current CEO Corie Barry announced that first-quarter sales increased by 2%, exceeding analysts’ expectations and signaling signs of stabilization after a difficult period for the electronics retailer.

Incoming CEO Outlines Long-Term Vision

Bonfig, who has spent approximately 27 years with Best Buy, is scheduled to officially become the company’s CEO on November 1.

During the May earnings call, he emphasized that expanding small and medium-sized store formats will remain a key part of Best Buy’s long-term strategy.

According to Bonfig, medium-format stores give the retailer flexibility to enter markets where larger locations are not practical, while small-format stores help the company move closer to customers in urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, and underserved areas.

Company leaders believe offering multiple store sizes will improve accessibility while allowing Best Buy to continue growing in markets where traditional locations are no longer the best fit.

As consumer shopping habits continue evolving, the retailer is betting that smaller, strategically placed stores can help strengthen its nationwide presence and attract customers who previously had limited access to Best Buy locations.
