Tennessee Mom Allegedly Left 1-Year-Old in Hot Car for Hours After Getting 'Extremely Intoxicated'

Tennessee — A birthday celebration allegedly turned into a dangerous situation for a 1-year-old after police say the child’s 20-year-old mother became heavily intoxicated and later left the child alone inside a vehicle for hours.

Ashlynn Elizabeth Taylor was taken into custody and charged with felony child abuse, neglect and endangerment of a child under 8, along with felony leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle, according to court records.

Police Find Baby Alone in Vehicle

Officers were called to a home in the 1300 block of Woodcrest Drive on Monday morning after a man reportedly discovered Taylor asleep inside a vehicle belonging to his family, according to local reports.

When officers spoke with Taylor, she allegedly told them she had been celebrating her 20th birthday the previous night and had become “extremely intoxicated.”

Taylor reportedly said she could not remember how she ended up inside the vehicle and acknowledged that the vehicle did not belong to her.

But investigators soon learned that Taylor’s 1-year-old child had also been with her during the overnight events.

Friend Says Taylor Refused to Leave the Car

According to police, Taylor’s friend told investigators that Taylor called her shortly before 3 a.m., initially asking for money and then asking to be picked up.

The friend reportedly drove Taylor and the child back to Taylor’s home. Once they arrived, however, Taylor allegedly refused to get out of the vehicle.

The friend said she initially took the baby inside, but the child began crying. She then reportedly brought the baby back outside to Taylor.

Before leaving, the friend said she cracked the vehicle’s windows and turned off the ignition. The situation reportedly changed several hours later.

Baby Allegedly Left Alone for Two Hours

At around 8 a.m., the friend’s sister was reportedly heading to school when she discovered that the baby was now alone inside the vehicle.

People reportedly could not locate Taylor, prompting someone to contact Taylor’s grandmother, who came to retrieve the child. When police later asked Taylor about her child, she allegedly told them that the baby was with her friend.

Investigators reportedly determined that Taylor had actually left the vehicle around 6 a.m., leaving the 1-year-old behind until the child was discovered at approximately 8 a.m.

Heat and Humidity Raised Additional Concerns

According to court records, conditions inside the vehicle were especially concerning during the period the child was allegedly left unattended.

The heat index reached 88 degrees, while humidity was reportedly 72%.

Taylor, meanwhile, was allegedly found sleeping in a neighbor’s vehicle. A neighbor’s daughter reportedly discovered her there shortly after the baby was found.

The circumstances led investigators to pursue felony charges related to the child’s safety and Taylor’s alleged decision to leave the child unattended.

Mother Faces Felony Charges

Taylor is facing two felony counts stemming from the incident: child abuse, neglect and endangerment involving a child under 8, and leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle.

She is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, according to court records.

The allegations remain accusations, and the charges must be resolved through the legal process. The case highlights the potentially serious consequences of leaving a young child unattended in a vehicle, particularly during warm and humid conditions.
