Hugo, Minnesota — A Minnesota murder trial is underway after authorities say deputies arrived at a rural home and found a 68-year-old woman severely beaten on the floor, with her son sitting beside her. Investigators allege the woman identified her son as the person who attacked her before she lost consciousness and later died at a hospital.
911 Call Led Police to Troubled Scene
The incident happened on the evening of Sept. 16, 2024, when Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a home on Ingersoll Avenue in Hugo, about 25 miles northeast of Minneapolis.
A 911 call remained open while dispatchers reportedly heard noises they believed were consistent with an ongoing struggle or assault.
When deputies entered the home, they found Charlene Wunderlich lying on the floor in obvious distress. Her son, Trevor Wunderlich, was reportedly sitting in a chair next to her.
Deputies attempted to detain him, but authorities say he ran into the basement and escaped through the back door.
Mother Identified Her Son Before Losing Consciousness
After Trevor allegedly fled, deputies immediately turned their attention to Charlene. Police said she had contusions, lacerations and other injuries across her face, head, arms, legs and torso.
Although she was conscious only briefly, investigators said Charlene was able to tell officers that her son had assaulted her. She soon lost consciousness and was transported to a local hospital.
Doctors were unable to save her.
Authorities determined that Charlene died from multiple blunt force injuries, including multiple rib fractures, a fractured sternum, bleeding within the chest wall and pulmonary contusions. Her death was classified as a homicide.
Suspect Fled Before Being Captured
Following Charlene’s death, authorities launched a search for Trevor and asked the public for help locating him. The following morning, a neighbor reportedly discovered a man believed to be Trevor inside a camper on her property.
The suspect allegedly ran away from the camper, but officers located him nearby and took him into custody. Trevor now faces first-degree premeditated murder and second-degree murder charges in connection with his mother’s death.
Mother Had Previously Reported Fear of Her Son
As investigators examined the family’s history, authorities reportedly uncovered earlier concerns involving Charlene and her son. Approximately four years before her death, Charlene had filed for an order of protection against Trevor.
In the application, she reportedly wrote that he wished she would die and said the behavior had been occurring for years and was continuing to escalate. Records reviewed by local media reportedly showed that Trevor had been arrested and booked into jail multiple times.
In one earlier incident, a witness allegedly reported that Trevor had given his mother a black eye and was behaving out of control. Following that incident, Charlene reportedly said she didn’t care if she lived or died anymore.
Prosecutors Point to Financial Motive
During opening statements in Trevor’s trial, prosecutors presented another alleged motive for the killing.
Assistant Washington County Attorney Richard Podvin told jurors that Charlene had life insurance policies, with some reportedly naming Trevor as a beneficiary.
The prosecutor argued that Charlene’s death could have left Trevor with access to property and more than $1 million.
Podvin also described the severity of the alleged attack, telling jurors that Charlene’s injuries were so extensive that her ribcage could no longer properly expand, preventing her from breathing normally.
The prosecution contends that she ultimately suffocated on her kitchen floor as a result of the injuries.
Defendant Maintains His Innocence
Trevor Wunderlich has maintained his innocence in the case. He previously told local television station KSTP that “the truth will come out.”
His trial began this week and was scheduled to continue Tuesday. If convicted of the most serious charges, Trevor could face life in prison.
The case remains pending, and the allegations against him have not been proven unless and until a jury reaches a guilty verdict.
