Bonita Springs, Florida — A Florida woman is facing a felony theft charge after investigators say she spent years convincing members of her community that she was battling cancer, ultimately collecting more than $40,000 from hundreds of people who believed they were helping someone facing a life-threatening illness.
Authorities say the alleged deception went far beyond simply telling people she was sick. Investigators claim Maribeth Ellen Jones, 51, took extensive steps to make the cancer story appear genuine.
Woman Allegedly Claimed She Had Cancer for Years
Jones, a former activities director at a Naples-area community, allegedly told residents between 2022 and 2024 that she had cancer and was receiving treatment.
According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Jones allegedly continued reinforcing the story as time went on, telling people that her condition was worsening.
Investigators say she even allowed members of the community to cut her hair, claiming she was preparing for chemotherapy. The actions reportedly convinced residents that Jones was genuinely undergoing a difficult medical battle.
Community Rallied Around Her
Concerned residents eventually organized a GoFundMe fundraiser to help Jones with what they believed were cancer-related expenses.
According to investigators, the campaign directed donations to Jones’ personal bank account.
Community members also reportedly gave her cash and personal checks, believing their contributions would help a neighbor dealing with serious medical problems.
But investigators say the story began to unravel after authorities discovered Jones had allegedly been the beneficiary of two previous GoFundMe campaigns in which she also claimed to have cancer.
Detectives concluded that Jones had not been suffering from the illness as claimed and allegedly used the money to pay personal debts.
More Than 200 People Allegedly Lost Money
Authorities say the alleged scheme affected 238 residents and generated more than $40,000 in donations.
The case has raised concerns not only about the financial losses suffered by individual donors but also about the potential damage to legitimate fundraising campaigns.
People who donate to medical fundraisers often do so because they want to help families facing genuine emergencies. Authorities say cases involving fabricated illnesses can make donors more hesitant to trust future appeals for help.
Sheriff Calls Alleged Scheme ‘Appalling’
Collier County Sheriff Kevin Rambosk condemned the alleged deception, saying it took advantage of people who sincerely believed they were helping someone fighting for her life.
He warned that authorities would pursue people who allegedly exploit the generosity of residents for personal financial gain.
The sheriff also said scams involving fake medical conditions can undermine public trust in legitimate fundraisers involving people who genuinely need assistance.
Jones reportedly turned herself in at the Naples Jail Center after detectives obtained an arrest warrant.
GoFundMe Says Donors Were Refunded
GoFundMe said it has zero tolerance for misuse of its fundraising platform.
The company confirmed that fundraisers organized on behalf of Jones were removed and that her account was banned from future fundraising.
According to the company, more than $41,000 was refunded to donors through its Giving Guarantee program. That program provides refunds in situations where the platform determines that something is not right with a fundraiser.
Jones Remains in Custody
Jones was arrested on Aug. 5 and charged with grand theft between $20,000 and $100,000, according to jail records. She remains in custody at the Collier County Jail, with her next court appearance scheduled for Aug. 31.
It is currently unclear whether Jones has retained an attorney who can speak publicly on her behalf. The allegations remain pending, and Jones is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
