Muskegon County, Michigan — A family outing on the Muskegon River turned into a terrifying three-day survival ordeal after a Michigan mother, her 9-year-old son and cousin became lost in the wilderness. The three were eventually found alive after rescuers followed footprints and heard their cries for help, bringing an emotional end to a search that had involved numerous emergency agencies and volunteers.
Family Disappears During River Outing
The missing family members were identified as Jazmin Hock, her cousin Sarah Vida, and Vida’s 9-year-old son, Kayden Kovalcik.
Michigan State Police were alerted on Wednesday, Aug. 5, after a relative became concerned when they could no longer reach the three family members.
Their vehicles were later located near the Maple Island Boat Launch along the Muskegon River. One of the vehicles reportedly had a broken window, adding to concerns about what might have happened to the group.
As the search continued, authorities brought together law enforcement agencies, fire departments, emergency responders, search-and-rescue teams and volunteers.
Nearly three days after the family disappeared, police announced that all three had been located alive and safe.
Family Survived on Limited Food
According to relatives, the three had some protein bars and water with them when they became stranded.
However, they were trying to conserve their supplies, particularly for Kayden. nThe family said they eventually began eating things they could find in the wilderness.
They reportedly ate flowers floating on the water, while Kayden, who apparently disliked the flowers, ate bark and ants. The details highlighted just how difficult the family’s time in the woods had become as they searched for a way out.
A relative said the adults had assumed they were prepared for the outing but acknowledged afterward that they had not anticipated becoming stranded for such an extended period.
The family now says they intend to make sure a similar situation never happens again.
Searchers Hear Cries for Help
At one point, the family attempted to follow traffic noises, hoping the sound would lead them toward a road or populated area. The effort was unsuccessful.
Eventually, Jazmin and Kayden stopped to rest while Sarah continued moving forward. Sarah reportedly told her family she had no intention of giving up after making it through difficult experiences in her life.
That determination ultimately helped lead rescuers toward the group.
According to the family, officers eventually discovered footprints and then heard the missing relatives calling for help. Rescuers followed the sounds and found the trio in a difficult section of thick vegetation.
Chainsaw Used to Reach Stranded Woman
Getting the family out was not as simple as locating them. Sarah was reportedly trapped in a dense patch of brush, requiring rescuers to use a chainsaw to clear a path and bring her to safety.
After the trio was successfully removed from the wilderness, all three were taken to the hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Kayden has since been released from the hospital, while the adults continued recovering.
Emotional Reunion After Rescue
For the family, the rescue brought enormous relief after days of uncertainty.
One relative described the emotional moment she reunited with Sarah, saying she gave her daughter a kiss before Sarah reportedly acknowledged what had happened with the words, “Hi, I messed up.”
Sarah was still recovering from an infection affecting her feet and legs, according to her family. The relatives also expressed deep gratitude toward the hundreds of people who participated in the search.
The family said they were overwhelmed by the number of people who came together to find them and praised the responders and volunteers who refused to stop searching.
After surviving the ordeal, the family says they plan to be far more prepared for future outdoor adventures.
