Georgia Father of Four Gives His Life to Save a Young Girl He Didn’t Even Know From From Ocean Current

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — A Georgia father of four lost his life while trying to save a young girl caught in a dangerous rip current at a popular South Carolina beach, turning what began as an evening near the ocean into a heartbreaking tragedy.

Derrick Moore, 47, of Loganville, Georgia, was identified by family members as the swimmer who disappeared after helping the girl escape the current.

Father Jumped Into Water to Rescue Girl

The incident happened at approximately 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, near 10th Avenue South in Myrtle Beach, according to local authorities.

Police and firefighters responded after receiving reports of a swimmer who had gone missing in the ocean.

Emergency responders learned that Moore had entered the water after encountering a young girl who was also caught in a rip current.

According to reports, Moore managed to bring the girl to safety. But after helping her escape the dangerous current, Moore himself was pulled underwater.

The young girl was not publicly identified, and authorities have not released information about her current condition.

Missing Swimmer Found the Following Day

Emergency crews searched for Moore after he disappeared beneath the water.

His body was ultimately recovered the following day near 11th Avenue South, approximately one block from where the initial emergency response began.

Family members later confirmed that the victim was Moore, a 47-year-old father of four and teacher who lived in Loganville, Georgia.

His death left his family devastated, particularly because he had entered the water to help someone he did not know.

Daughter Remembers ‘Great Father’

Moore’s daughter shared an emotional statement following his death, describing the pain of losing her father.

“We loved him and are truly heartbroken that he’s gone.”

She added that he was “a great father” and said the entire family would miss him.

The tragedy has also drawn attention to Moore’s actions in the moments before his death. Although he did not know the girl, he reportedly chose to enter the water when he saw her in danger.

Another Family Says Moore Saved Them

An emotional development emerged when a man claiming to be the girl’s uncle commented on a social media post shared by one of Moore’s grieving sons.

The man reportedly wrote that Moore had saved him and his niece, while expressing his condolences to Moore’s family.

“He saved me and my niece. I am so sorry. My heart goes out to the family.”

The man said he was attempting to contact Moore’s relatives directly.

His identity has not been publicly released, and social media users have reportedly been trying to help connect him with Moore’s family.

Tragedy Happened After Lifeguards Left

According to reports, the rescue happened after lifeguards had gone off duty, meaning there were no active lifeguards immediately available to respond when the girl was caught in the current.

Rip currents can pull swimmers away from shore quickly and can be extremely dangerous even for strong swimmers.

The circumstances surrounding Moore’s decision to enter the water remain part of the heartbreaking story. What is clear is that he managed to get the young girl to safety but was unable to escape the current himself.

For Moore’s family, his final moments reflect the courage and instinct that led him to help someone in danger.
