Ferguson, Missouri — What was meant to be a joyful family celebration before moving into a new home ended in tragedy when a 35-year-old mother of five was fatally shot outside a Missouri gas station while buying slushies for her children, according to police.
Authorities say Shakeela Martin had done nothing to provoke the violence and was an innocent bystander caught in a shooting that investigators believe targeted someone else.
Police Say Mother Was an Innocent Victim
According to the Ferguson Police Department, the shooting happened shortly before midnight on June 30 outside a BP gas station.
Martin had stopped at the store with two of her children, ages 9 and 6, to buy slushies as a way to celebrate the family’s upcoming move into a new home the following day.
As she walked out of the store with her children, gunfire erupted after suspects arrived in a vehicle and opened fire, police said.
Martin was struck during the shooting and died at the scene despite emergency responders’ efforts. Another man who was also hit by gunfire was transported to a hospital and has since been released.
Three Men Charged in Connection With the Shooting
Investigators have charged Marcus Evans, 21, Kyren Farmer, 21, and Jontez Young, 19, with second-degree murder, assault, and discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle.
Police Chief Troy Doyle emphasized that investigators do not believe Martin was the intended target.
According to Doyle, she was not involved in any argument or dispute and had simply been caring for her children when the shooting occurred.
He described Martin as “a good, loving mother” whose death deeply affected investigators working the case.
Surveillance Footage Helped Detectives Identify Suspects
Police said detectives reviewed surveillance video that linked a Chevrolet Malibu to the shooting. According to investigators, the evidence eventually led them to identify the three suspects.
Authorities said officers also recovered bullets matching the same brand and caliber as shell casings found at the crime scene during a search of Jontez Young’s home.
Investigators further allege that Marcus Evans admitted he was inside the Malibu, while Kyren Farmer acknowledged being the driver at the time of the shooting.
The three suspects were arrested and booked into the St. Louis Detention Center, where each is being held on bonds of at least $2 million.
They are scheduled to make their next court appearance on Thursday.
Prosecutors Promise to Seek Justice
St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price Smith expressed sympathy for Martin’s family while announcing the charges.
She said “A mother should be able to go to a gas station and get slushies for her children without risking violence.”
Police Chief Doyle also praised detectives for their work, saying the case became deeply personal because an innocent mother lost her life while simply spending time with her children.
Family Remembers a Loving Mother
A fundraiser created for Martin’s family describes her as a devoted mother whose five children were the center of her life.
According to the campaign, the family had been preparing to move into their new home the very next day, and the stop for slushies was meant to celebrate the exciting milestone together.
