Upper Gwynedd Township, Pennsylvania — A Pennsylvania daycare worker is facing multiple felony charges after investigators accused him of abusing several young children for behaviors as minor as singing, moving in their seats, or failing to stay quiet.
Authorities say one child suffered a fractured ankle, while other children were left with injuries that ultimately led state officials to shut down the childcare facility.
Police Say Multiple Children Were Allegedly Abused
According to the Upper Gwynedd Police Department, Daniel Patrick Riley, 47, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault, four counts of endangering the welfare of children, and one misdemeanor count of tampering with evidence.
The investigation began in March, when several parents contacted police with concerns about alleged abuse involving children at Little Lambs Daycare.
Riley worked at the daycare as an assistant director and toddler room teacher. The facility is owned by his mother. Investigators say the complaints described a pattern of alleged physical abuse involving multiple children.
Children Allegedly Punished for Singing and Moving
According to police, one toddler suffered a rug burn after Riley allegedly dragged the child across the floor because the child was singing.
Investigators also allege Riley kicked and stepped on another child’s foot, while another child was allegedly pulled up from the floor with enough force to cause an abrasion.
In another incident, police say Riley grabbed a child’s face from underneath the chin and squeezed the child’s cheeks because the child was not sitting still or being quiet.
Authorities further allege that Riley frequently yelled at children and placed toddlers in timeouts that lasted an unreasonable amount of time.
The allegations remain accusations, and the charges have not yet been proven in court.
One Child Reportedly Suffered a Fractured Ankle
During the investigation, detectives determined that one of the children suffered a fractured ankle, according to police. Investigators believe the injury was connected to one of the alleged abuse incidents under review.
Officials have not released additional details about how the fracture occurred, but detectives described multiple incidents in which Riley allegedly used excessive force while supervising young children.
Police Say Surveillance Footage Was Deleted
Authorities also accuse Riley of attempting to conceal evidence.
According to investigators, surveillance video showing some of the alleged abuse was deleted, leading to the additional tampering with evidence charge.
At the same time, the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services conducted its own investigation into the daycare. Following that review, the agency revoked Little Lambs Daycare’s operating license, effectively shutting down the facility.
Parent Says Daughter Returned Home With Bruises
One mother whose child attended the daycare told that her daughter began coming home with bruises and other signs of possible mistreatment.
She said her daughter later described what Riley had allegedly done to her. The mother said learning about the allegations has been devastating.
“I have so many feelings, I am extremely hurt.”
Riley turned himself in to authorities and was booked into the Montgomery County Prison.
He is currently being held on $25,000 bond, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 13. The investigation remains ongoing, and prosecutors have not indicated whether additional charges could be filed.
