Goddard, Kansas — What began as a relaxing family campfire by a lake has turned into a months-long medical battle for a Kansas mother of four. After being bitten by multiple spiders during the outing, Britagne Miller developed severe complications that led to emergency surgery, dangerous infections, and a fight for survival that continues today.
Her family says they never imagined a few spider bites could change their lives so dramatically.
Family Outing Took a Devastating Turn
According to her husband, Jake Miller, the family was enjoying a campfire near a lake on May 28 when several spiders crawled onto Britagne and bit her multiple times.
At first, the bites appeared minor. However, within days, one bite on her calf became increasingly painful and swollen. Britagne recalled that the pain became so intense it felt like “a fire stir that’s metal” stabbing through her leg and into her foot.
As the swelling worsened, doctors admitted her to Wesley Hospital in Wichita on June 4, where they discovered serious blood clotting complications.
Emergency Surgery Led to More Medical Challenges
Doctors determined Britagne needed immediate surgery to remove nearly 300 milliliters of blood clots from her leg and insert a drain to help the wound heal.
The procedure carried additional risks because Britagne had previously been diagnosed with two blood clotting disorders during pregnancy. She was also living with end-stage liver failure and had allergies to several foods and medications.
Just days after surgery, her condition became even more critical when she developed a staph infection and a gram-negative bloodstream infection, creating a series of life-threatening complications.
According to Jake, doctors warned that her compromised liver significantly increased the risk of severe bleeding during treatment.
Doctors Recommended Hospice, But She Refused to Give Up
Jake shared that multiple doctors believed Britagne had only days to a month to live and recommended hospice care after she had spent two weeks in the hospital.
He said his wife was frequently incoherent as her condition deteriorated. Despite those grim predictions, Britagne made it clear she wanted to keep fighting.
She later explained that although she felt exhausted by repeated surgeries and medical procedures, thoughts of her husband and their four children, ranging in age from 9 to 15, gave her the strength to continue.
After spending 10 days in the intensive care unit, she gradually improved enough to move to the cardiac ICU and later a regular hospital room before finally returning home on July 11.
Long Road to Recovery Continues
Although Britagne is now recovering at home, her medical journey is far from over. Doctors have determined she needs a liver transplant, but she is not yet eligible to be placed on the transplant waiting list.
According to Jake, physicians must first stabilize her blood clotting and liver function so she can safely undergo transplant surgery.
In the meantime, Britagne attends weekly appointments with specialists who continue monitoring her condition. She has also started physical therapy as she works to regain the ability to walk normally on her right leg.
Spider Bite Believed to Be From Brown Recluse
Doctors have not been able to confirm exactly which spider bit Britagne.
However, based on the appearance of the wound, she believes it was likely a brown recluse spider, one of the two venomous spider species native to Kansas.
Medical experts note that reactions to brown recluse bites can range from mild skin irritation to severe tissue damage and, in rare cases, serious infections requiring urgent medical treatment.
Jake says watching his wife endure months of pain has been heartbreaking, but he remains inspired by her determination to recover and return to what she loves most — being a mom to their four children.
