Lake Tahoe, Nevada — Family and friends are mourning the loss of an Amazon software engineer from Austin, Texas, after a visit to Lake Tahoe that was meant to be filled with friendship and faith ended in tragedy.
Loved ones say 32-year-old Yadessa Emiru Aga had traveled to Nevada to attend a church conference and spend time with close friends before he drowned in what authorities believe was an accidental incident.
Family Shares Why He Was Visiting Lake Tahoe
According to a fundraiser organized by Yadessa Aga’s family, friends, and church community, the Austin resident had traveled to Nevada after attending a church conference and planned to spend time with close friends at Lake Tahoe.
The family said that “while returning from a church conference and spending time with close friends in Lake Tahoe, Nevada, Yadessa went home to be with his Lord and Savior following a tragic accident.”
Loved ones described Aga as someone whose faith guided every aspect of his life, saying he was known for his humble spirit, contagious smile, and generous heart.
They added that he loved traveling, exploring nature, and creating meaningful memories with those around him, while always placing his faith at the center of his life.
Drowning Happened Near Sand Harbor
According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the North Sand Harbor boat ramp at approximately 8 p.m. Monday after receiving reports of a possible water rescue.
Investigators said Aga had swum toward a group of offshore granite boulders around dusk before disappearing beneath the water and becoming unresponsive.
Before emergency crews arrived, bystanders entered the lake and brought him back to shore, where sheriff’s deputies immediately began CPR.
Emergency medical personnel continued lifesaving efforts after reaching the scene. Despite those attempts, Aga was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities are currently treating the incident as an apparent accidental drowning.
Amazon Employee Remembered for His Kindness
Aga worked as a software engineer for Amazon in Austin, according to his professional profile.
The fundraiser created in his memory says he touched countless lives through his compassion, generosity, and unwavering faith.
Family members wrote that he made everyone around him feel welcomed and loved, describing him as someone who served both his church and community with humility.
They also said they are working alongside Amazon to help cover part of the costs associated with transporting his remains and arranging funeral services in both the United States and Ethiopia.
Additional donations will help support the remaining funeral expenses and provide him with a dignified final resting place, according to organizers.
Investigation Into Death Remains Active
Officials said the investigation into Aga’s death is still ongoing.
The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that an official cause of death has not yet been released, as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities noted that completed examination reports generally require 10 to 12 weeks before final findings are available.
The tragedy comes only weeks after another fatal water incident near Sand Harbor in June, highlighting the potential dangers that can arise even at one of Lake Tahoe’s most popular recreation areas.
While investigators continue their work, friends and family say they are focusing on honoring Aga’s life, remembering him not for the tragedy that claimed him, but for the faith, kindness, and joy he shared with everyone who knew him.
