Father of Four Killed While Celebrating 40th Birthday Trip as Random Restaurant Shooting Shocks Ohio Family

Ohio — What was supposed to be a joyful birthday getaway for an Ohio family ended in heartbreaking tragedy after a father of four was fatally shot inside a restaurant while vacationing with his wife, just days before celebrating his 40th birthday.

Robert “Rob” Russell had traveled to Put-in-Bay, Ohio, a popular Lake Erie island destination, for a weekend celebration. Instead, the trip turned into a devastating loss that has left his family mourning and authorities searching for answers.

Shooting Happened During Birthday Getaway

The fatal shooting occurred just after midnight on Thursday, July 23, inside Mr. Ed’s Bar & Grille in Put-in-Bay.

Emergency responders arrived to find Rob Russell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead.

Authorities later identified the suspected shooter as 21-year-old Colton Smith of Brownstown, Michigan. According to public arrest records, Smith is being held on a murder charge with a cash bond of more than $1 million.

Investigators have not announced a motive, and the case remains under investigation.

Family Says There Was No Confrontation

According to Rob’s sister, Christi Russell, the shooting appeared to happen without any warning. She told local media that her brother had simply gotten up to use the restroom when the incident unfolded.

“There was no altercation,” Christi said. “He was simply enjoying a night out with his wife.”

She explained that visiting Put-in-Bay had become a cherished tradition for the family, who returned to the island every summer.

Prosecutors have also stated that the victim and the suspect did not know each other before the shooting, making the tragedy even more shocking for Rob’s loved ones.

Wife Describes Husband’s Death as a “Senseless Act of Violence”

Following the tragedy, Rob’s wife, Lindsay Russell, created a GoFundMe page to support their family and shared an emotional tribute to her husband.

She described the shooting as a “senseless act of violence,” explaining that the couple had just arrived on the island to celebrate Rob’s milestone birthday when everything changed.

In her message, Lindsay remembered her husband as far more than a devoted husband and father.

“Rob was so much more than a husband and father. He was a constant presence, a source of strength, a comforting hand, a helping hand, a perseverer, a man of unwavering faith, and a father who intentionally led and loved his family and children toward Christ every single day,” she wrote.

She added that “The void he leaves behind is immeasurable.”

Murder Case Moves Forward

Authorities say Colton Smith remains in custody as the criminal case proceeds.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 31 in Ottawa Municipal Court. Prosecutors have not released additional information regarding what may have led to the shooting, and investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

For Rob Russell’s family, however, the legal process comes after an unimaginable loss. What began as a long-awaited birthday celebration instead became a tragedy that forever changed the lives of his wife and their four children.

As investigators continue piecing together what happened, the case has drawn attention for its seemingly random nature and the devastating impact it has had on an unsuspecting family.
