WALLKILL, New York — What was meant to be a thrilling circus performance at the Orange County Fair quickly turned into a frightening emergency when a dangerous stunt went wrong, leaving one performer seriously injured in front of spectators.
The incident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. Friday during a performance by Circus Murcia, when a crossbow act failed after an arrow missed its intended target and struck a fellow performer in the neck, according to New York State Police.
Circus stunt ends in terrifying accident
Authorities identified the performers as Ana Daza Tavera, 42, and Edwin Cuervo Rangel, 38. The pair were performing a high-risk stunt in which Daza Tavera fired a crossbow at a foam target being held by Cuervo Rangel.
Instead of hitting the target, the arrow struck Cuervo Rangel in the neck, immediately turning the performance into a medical emergency.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the fairgrounds, and due to the nature of the injury, Cuervo Rangel was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for treatment.
Ringmaster describes what happened
Circus Murcia Ringmaster Benjamin Jackson described the frightening moment while speaking to News 12, explaining that the accident could have ended much worse.
“Well, last night, unfortunately, when she shot the crossbow, it caught him in his neck.”
Jackson also noted that the location of the injury may have prevented even more serious consequences.
“The good news is, she caught him right at the very corner of the neck. There was no blood, nothing.”
His comments offered some reassurance after what appeared to be a terrifying accident during the live show.
Performer expected to make a full recovery
According to police, Cuervo Rangel remains in stable condition at Westchester Medical Center.
Circus Murcia owner Alexander Murcia also addressed the incident in a public statement, saying the injured performer is expected to make a full recovery.

“Our thoughts remain with him during his recovery, and we sincerely appreciate the outstanding care provided by the first responders, medical team, and everyone who assisted.”
The statement thanked emergency crews, hospital staff, and everyone involved in responding to the incident.
Investigation remains underway
While the performer’s condition has improved, New York State Police confirmed the investigation into the incident is ongoing. Authorities have not announced whether any safety concerns or additional factors contributed to the crossbow accident.
The Orange County Fair attraction had drawn crowds with its daring performances, but Friday night’s mishap served as a reminder of the risks involved in live stunt entertainment, even when performed by experienced professionals.
Fortunately, officials say the outcome appears to have been far less severe than it could have been, with the injured performer expected to recover from the frightening accident.
