California—A California sailor who disappeared in the vast Pacific Ocean for more than a month has shared the extraordinary story of how he survived alone at sea before being dramatically rescued near Hawaii, ending what seemed like an impossible fight for survival.
Kai Sato, 39, set sail from Catalina Island, California, on June 7, expecting a routine solo voyage. Instead, his journey turned into a life-threatening ordeal after the mast on his sailboat snapped, he ran out of fuel, and his phone lost power, leaving him stranded far from shipping routes with no reliable way to call for help.
A Routine Voyage Turned Into a Nightmare
According to Sato, the damage to his sailboat left him drifting helplessly as ocean currents carried him farther from his planned route.
For days, he watched any hope of rescue disappear as the Pacific pushed him farther south. The isolation and uncertainty took an emotional toll, leaving him convinced he might never make it home.
“I cried for a whole week, just drifting south, like miserable. I felt like I was going to just try to turn my motor on and just suffocate, to kill myself,” he told Hawaii News Now.
He also described feeling “like a sitting duck,” powerless as the currents carried him away from potential rescuers.
Survival Meant Using Whatever Was Available
After several days of despair, Sato decided he had to keep fighting.
Using PVC pipes and kayak paddles, he improvised repairs to his damaged sailboat, allowing him to slowly work his way back toward the busy shipping route between California and Hawaii.
Food quickly became scarce.
He survived by eating leftover oatmeal, along with fish and squid that unexpectedly landed aboard his boat. Fresh drinking water was another major challenge, forcing him to rely on moisture that condensed inside a bucket after exposure to seawater.
“I was just licking that to survive,” Sato said while describing how little water he had available.
His determination allowed him to remain alive despite spending weeks isolated in one of the world’s largest oceans.
Dramatic Rescue Near Hawaii
Nearly a month after becoming stranded, Sato finally reached an area where commercial ships regularly travel.
On Tuesday, a container ship bound for Hawaii spotted the disabled sailboat and launched a rescue operation.
Crew members aboard the Pasha Hawaii vessel needed two attempts to lower a rope ladder before successfully bringing Sato safely aboard.
Images captured during the rescue showed the severe damage to the sailboat, including its broken mast and damaged sails floating in the water. Video recorded by Sato during the ordeal also documented rough ocean conditions and the constant waves battering the small vessel.
Once safely aboard, sailors immediately provided food, fresh water, and clean clothing after weeks of survival at sea.
“Oh my God, yeah, like ecstatic… I was crying and so happy. Then they got me fruit and water… they were so good to me, those guys,” Sato recalled.
Looking Ahead After an Incredible Ordeal
Sato is now staying with a relative in Hawaii as he recovers from his remarkable survival experience.
Despite enduring weeks alone in the Pacific and facing moments when he feared he would not survive, the solo sailor has not given up on his dream of ocean travel.
He says he still plans to continue his journey to the Philippines, this time aboard a larger and more capable vessel.
His story stands as a remarkable example of determination, resourcefulness, and survival against overwhelming odds in one of the most unforgiving environments on Earth.
