Hawaii – Hawaii is keeping a close eye on Hurricane Fausto, even though the storm is not expected to make landfall on the island chain. While the hurricane continues to weaken over the Pacific Ocean, forecasters warn that its greatest impact could arrive in the form of powerful ocean swells, dangerous surf, and life-threatening rip currents over the next couple of days.
Hurricane Fausto Continues to Weaken Over the Pacific
After strengthening into a Category 2 hurricane, Fausto has steadily lost intensity and is now a Category 1 storm as it moves westward across the Pacific.
According to the latest forecast, the storm is expected to continue on a west to west-northwest track, passing well north of the Hawaiian Islands on Tuesday into Wednesday. By the time it reaches its closest point to the state, forecasters expect Fausto to have weakened into a tropical storm.
As of the latest advisory, Hurricane Fausto was located about 825 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, moving west at 14 mph with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph and a minimum central pressure of 984 mb.
Dangerous 15-Foot Waves Could Reach Hawaii
Even though the center of the storm will remain far offshore, Hawaii is still expected to experience hazardous ocean conditions.
Forecasters say swells will continue building along east-facing shores through Tuesday, with waves reaching up to 15 feet in some locations. These powerful swells are expected to create dangerous surf and strong rip currents, increasing the risk for anyone entering the water.
Beachgoers, swimmers, surfers, and boaters are being urged to exercise caution as ocean conditions can become dangerous even when skies appear calm.
Closest Approach Expected Midweek
Current projections show Fausto making its closest approach to Oahu and Kauai on Wednesday, though the storm is forecast to be considerably weaker by that time.
Because the system is expected to stay well north of the islands, meteorologists do not anticipate widespread wind damage or significant flooding. Instead, the primary concern remains the rough surf generated by the storm’s large circulation over the open Pacific.
Residents should continue monitoring local forecasts, as ocean conditions can change quickly when tropical systems pass nearby.
Hawaii Avoids a Direct Hit
Despite its approach, forecasters emphasize that Hurricane Fausto is not expected to pose a major threat to Hawaii.
Unlike hurricanes that move directly across the islands, Fausto is forecast to remain offshore, meaning little rainfall is expected, and widespread impacts from strong winds are unlikely. However, officials continue to remind residents and visitors that dangerous surf alone can be life-threatening, especially along exposed coastlines.
