Ruskin, Florida — A Florida man has been found guilty of first-degree murder after prosecutors said he killed a man he had only met hours earlier during a Memorial Day weekend drinking session before dumping the victim’s body into the water at a marina.
A Hillsborough County jury convicted Kamal Padlowski, 52, on Thursday in the death of Melvin Jimenez, 47, ending a case that centered on surveillance video, witness testimony and Padlowski’s unsuccessful claim that he acted in self-defense.
The deadly confrontation occurred on May 25, 2024, at Little Harbor Marina in Ruskin.
Night of Celebration Ended in Deadly Violence
According to prosecutors, Padlowski and Jimenez first met at the nearby Sunset Bar and Grill, where both men were celebrating personal milestones.
Investigators said Jimenez had recently secured a contract to install security cameras for Walmart, while Padlowski had become engaged the previous day.
After sharing drinks and conversation at the bar, the two men walked to Padlowski’s docked sailboat, where they continued drinking with Padlowski’s fiancée for roughly 40 minutes.
Authorities said what began as a friendly gathering quickly turned violent.
Surveillance footage showed the two men shoving one another aboard the sailboat before the altercation spilled onto the marina gangway.
Prosecutors Say Victim Was Dumped Into Water
Investigators said Padlowski shoved Jimenez during the fight, causing him to fall backward and strike his head on the dock.
Officials said the victim became motionless after suffering severe injuries.
Instead of calling 911 or attempting to provide aid, prosecutors said Padlowski grabbed Jimenez by the ankles and dragged him into the marina before pushing him into the water.
During his testimony, Padlowski denied realizing the victim was unconscious.
“I didn’t know he was unconscious. I didn’t know that he had even fallen,” Padlowski said in court. “I knew he was still a threat to me, and I just wanted to get distance between us.”
Medical testimony revealed that Jimenez suffered vertebral fractures that severed both vertebral arteries during the fall.
Although a forensic pathologist testified those injuries were fatal, officials ultimately ruled that Jimenez died from drowning.
Jury Rejected Self-Defense Argument
Throughout the trial, Padlowski claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Jimenez threatened to kill him and sexually assault his fiancée before lunging toward them.
However, prosecutors argued the surveillance footage contradicted that version of events.
They told jurors the video showed Padlowski punching Jimenez and grabbing him by the throat before the victim fell onto the gangway.
Authorities also testified that Padlowski remained near his sailboat armed with two kitchen knives until deputies arrived.
Investigators said he initially claimed he did not know where Jimenez had gone, despite surveillance cameras recording the confrontation.
Victim’s Family Speaks Following Verdict
Jimenez’s family delivered emotional testimony during the trial, strongly rejecting Padlowski’s account of what happened.
“Just unbelievable because I don’t believe a word he says. I think he is a narcissist and a murderer,” Jimenez’s wife, Angela Sprenger, told the court.
She also criticized what she described as attacks on her husband’s character.
Jimenez’s daughter, Kimberly, reflected on the lasting impact of the tragedy.
“At least he’ll get to spend the rest of his day thinking about my dad and how maybe if he was a better man and had a better character like my dad, he would have made the decisions that he did to lead to this,” she testified.
Following the guilty verdict, Padlowski now faces a mandatory life sentence in Florida State Prison, with his sentencing hearing scheduled for August 17.
