Los Angeles, California — Food lovers in Southern California are getting a rare opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most celebrated restaurants without boarding an international flight.
Tokyo’s Tonkatsu Narikura, a restaurant widely regarded as one of the finest places in the world for tonkatsu, will host a two-night-only pop-up in Los Angeles, giving diners the chance to try its legendary menu that is typically one of the hardest reservations to secure in Japan.
For many food enthusiasts, landing a table at Narikura has long been considered an achievement in itself.
Tokyo Restaurant Is Famous for Nearly Impossible Reservations
Located in Tokyo, Tonkatsu Narikura has earned an international reputation not only for its food but also for the incredible difficulty of booking a table.
Because of the restaurant’s limited seating and overwhelming demand, reservations often disappear almost instantly, making successful bookings a prized accomplishment among travelers and culinary enthusiasts.
Many visitors compare obtaining a reservation to winning the lottery, with some saying it’s even more difficult than securing seats at some of Japan’s famous omakase restaurants.
The rare Los Angeles appearance now offers American diners a much easier opportunity to experience the restaurant’s signature cooking style.
Master Chef Flying From Japan for Exclusive Collaboration
For the special event, Chef Seizo Mitani will travel from Japan to work alongside Brothers Sushi chef-owner Mark Okuda.
The collaboration will be held on July 19 at Brothers Sushi in Culver City and July 20 at the restaurant’s Santa Monica location.
Chef Mitani will personally prepare Narikura’s signature “blonde” tonkatsu, a unique style that differs from the darker, crispier pork cutlets commonly served in many restaurants.
Instead of high-temperature frying, the pork is cooked slowly at a lower temperature, producing a delicate golden crust while maintaining a tender, juicy interior.
To preserve the restaurant’s authentic flavor, Chef Mitani is also bringing his signature breadcrumbs directly from Japan and will prepare the dishes using premium pork supplied by Peads & Barnetts.
Six-Course Menu Offers Rare Dining Experience
Guests attending the pop-up can expect a carefully prepared six-course meal, complete with rice, soup and dessert, for $150 per person.
Given Narikura’s worldwide reputation and the chef’s limited appearance in the United States, reservations are expected to sell out quickly.
For many diners, this event offers a unique opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most sought-after restaurants without the expense and planning of an overseas trip.
Limited-Time Event Expected to Draw Huge Demand
With only two nights of service, demand is expected to be exceptionally high among Los Angeles food lovers and visitors alike.
Instead of navigating international travel and competing for one of Tokyo’s most elusive reservations, diners simply need to secure one of the limited seats available during the California pop-up.
For anyone who has dreamed of tasting Narikura’s acclaimed tonkatsu, this may be one of the rarest dining opportunities to arrive in Los Angeles this year.
