Anne Arundel County, Maryland — After spending seven years waiting for the right family, a shelter dog named Kylo Jace has finally found his forever home, bringing tears to the staff and volunteers who cared for him throughout his long journey.
The SPCA of Anne Arundel County announced the heartwarming adoption on social media, sharing emotional photos of Kylo leaving the shelter with the woman who spent months patiently earning his trust.
For everyone who had watched Kylo wait year after year, the moment marked the happy ending they had long hoped for.
Shelter’s Longest Resident Finally Gets His Happy Ending
Kylo had been the longest-serving resident at the Maryland shelter, where staff members and volunteers cared for him every day while searching for the right adopter.
According to the shelter, Kylo’s biggest challenge wasn’t finding people who liked him—it was learning to trust them.
The organization explained that the lovable dog needed many meetings with new people before feeling safe enough to reveal his affectionate and playful personality.
As a result, only a small group of volunteers and staff members had earned his trust over the years, and they shared responsibility for walking and caring for him.
“Kylo is a dog who takes many, many meetings with someone in order to fully trust them and feel comfortable enough to show his true silly, wonderful personality,” the shelter wrote.

Everything changed when Kylo’s future owner entered his life.
Instead of expecting an instant bond, she committed herself to visiting the dog twice every week for seven months, patiently allowing him to become comfortable at his own pace.
The shelter said that slowly but surely, Kylo welcomed her into the small circle of people he trusted.
Staff members also helped prepare Kylo for life outside the shelter by introducing him to his new owner’s vehicle and arranging home visits before adoption day.
Those extra steps ensured the transition would be as comfortable as possible for the dog after spending so many years inside the shelter.
Emotional Farewell Leaves Staff in Tears
When adoption day finally arrived, emotions ran high throughout the shelter.
Photos shared by the SPCA showed volunteers, trainers and staff members hugging one another and wiping away tears as they said goodbye to the dog many had known for years.
One image captured Kylo sitting happily in the back seat of his new owner’s vehicle, ready to begin the next chapter of his life.
“He gets to spend the rest of his life loved for exactly who he is!” the shelter wrote while celebrating the adoption.
The organization also praised its volunteers and employees for never giving up on Kylo and thanked his new owner for believing in a dog that many others may have overlooked.
Adoption Honors Beloved Volunteer
Kylo’s adoption carried an even deeper meaning for the shelter community.
The SPCA shared that his adoption fee had been fully paid in memory of Jim Ehrig, a longtime volunteer who passed away in 2020.
According to the shelter, Ehrig had formed a special bond with Kylo during his years of volunteering, and staff members believe he would have been thrilled to see the dog finally find a loving family.
