Possible Arson Destroys Beloved El Compadre Market in Sun Valley, Investigation Underway

SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES — A beloved neighborhood market and restaurant in Sun Valley was heavily damaged after a fire tore through a strip mall early Sunday morning, leaving one business completely destroyed and prompting an arson investigation by Los Angeles authorities.

The blaze broke out shortly before 5 a.m. in the 8500 block of North Sunland Boulevard, where more than 100 firefighters responded to battle the flames. While no injuries were reported, the fire caused significant damage to multiple businesses, with longtime community favorite El Compadre suffering the most extensive destruction.

Firefighters Quickly Bring Blaze Under Control

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), firefighters arrived at the scene shortly after the fire was reported and worked aggressively to prevent the flames from spreading further through the strip mall.

More than 100 firefighters participated in the emergency response, bringing the fire under control in approximately 34 minutes despite the intensity of the blaze.

Officials confirmed that no civilians or firefighters were injured during the incident. However, several businesses sustained damage, and one storefront was completely destroyed by the fire.

Emergency crews remained at the scene for hours after the flames were extinguished to investigate the cause and assess structural damage.

Authorities Investigating Fire as Possible Arson

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities say the incident is being treated as possible arson.

The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that its Arson Investigation Unit responded to the scene to examine evidence and determine how the fire started.

According to Gerardo Salcedo, whose father owns El Compadre, investigators showed the family surveillance footage that allegedly captured a man arriving on a bicycle during the early morning hours.

Salcedo said the video appeared to show the individual pushing a bottle through the business’s mail slot before leaving the area. Minutes later, the building was reportedly engulfed in flames.

Authorities have not publicly identified any suspects or announced arrests, and investigators continue reviewing evidence as the case remains active.

Family Says Business Was Built Through Decades of Hard Work

For the Salcedo family, the destruction represents far more than the loss of a building.

Gerardo Salcedo said his father spent three decades working multiple jobs to achieve his dream of owning the neighborhood business. After years of hard work, he purchased El Compadre approximately nine years ago and devoted himself to serving the local community.

Speaking about the emotional impact of the fire, Salcedo said watching everything disappear in such a short period has been devastating for the family.

“Everybody’s sad. My dad worked 30 years. He worked three jobs to afford this place,” Salcedo said. “He’s been trying to be nice to as many people as he can. He tries to help out the community and to just have everything taken away from him in 20 minutes is tough.”

Family members said they have no idea why anyone would intentionally target the business.

Customers Describe Owner as a Lifeline for the Community

As news of the fire spread, longtime customers gathered outside the damaged business, expressing shock and sadness over what had happened.

Many described El Compadre as much more than a neighborhood grocery store, saying it had become a place where residents could always find help during difficult times.

One customer recalled periods when they struggled to afford food, saying the owner never turned away someone in need.

“There were times where I didn’t eat anything and I would just go to sleep hungry. But I knew no matter what, I could always come here and get something to eat, even if I had no money,” the customer said.

The customer added that the owner consistently supported people facing hardship and encouraged others to pray for the family and assist with rebuilding efforts.

Store Reportedly Helped Families Facing Financial Hardship

According to Salcedo, his father operated the business with a simple philosophy: no one in the neighborhood should go hungry because they could not afford groceries.

He said the store maintained a wall containing unpaid customer bills, allowing individuals and families experiencing financial difficulties to take food or groceries home and pay when they were able.

That practice earned the business deep respect throughout the community, where many residents viewed El Compadre as a trusted gathering place rather than simply another local market.

Customers also noted that the business included a restaurant featuring music and entertainment, making it a popular destination where neighbors gathered to socialize and support one another.

Investigation Continues as Community Rallies Around Family

Investigators continue examining surveillance footage and physical evidence collected from the scene to determine whether the fire was intentionally set and, if so, who may be responsible.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the investigation, and no arrests have been announced.

Meanwhile, friends, customers and community members have begun rallying around the Salcedo family, expressing support and hope that the beloved neighborhood business will eventually be rebuilt.

For many residents, the fire represents the loss of a local institution known not only for its food and groceries but also for the compassion and generosity shown to countless families over the years.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not determined the official cause of the fire. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
