Indiana Man Accused of Cutting Off His Own Genitals Before Setting Family Garage on Fire, Police Say

Fort Wayne, Indiana — An Indiana man is facing a felony arson charge after investigators say he deliberately set fire to his family’s detached garage following a disturbing series of events that he later described to police.

According to court documents, 36-year-old Christopher Michael Peden was arrested after authorities concluded he was responsible for a garage fire that broke out on May 6 at a property owned by his family in Fort Wayne.

The incident prompted separate emergency responses from firefighters and police after reports of both a garage fire and an alleged stabbing.

Police Say Initial Stabbing Story Was False

According to investigators, officers responding to the scene initially encountered Peden, who claimed he had been stabbed in downtown Fort Wayne after being threatened the previous day.

While officers investigated that report, firefighters responded to the detached garage, located near the home where Peden’s mother and brother lived.

Court documents state that Peden’s brother told investigators a neighbor had awakened him to alert him that the garage was on fire.

He also informed authorities that the garage had no electrical service, leaving investigators to consider whether the fire had been intentionally started.

Investigators Say Man Later Confessed

After being transported to a nearby hospital, Peden allegedly admitted that the account he had given officers was untrue. According to charging documents, he told investigators he wanted to explain what had actually happened.

Police allege Peden said he entered the garage during the early morning hours carrying a kitchen knife, inflicted a severe injury on himself, poured gasoline inside the garage and intentionally ignited the fire.

Because the case involves graphic allegations of self-inflicted injury, authorities have not indicated that any other person was involved in causing those injuries.

Investigators say he then left the property and continued walking until he encountered police officers.

Evidence Recovered Inside the Garage

Fire investigators searching the garage reportedly recovered several items believed to be connected to the incident.

According to court records, authorities found a kitchen knife, a red gasoline container and four lighters inside the damaged structure.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the extent of the fire damage or whether anyone else was injured during the incident.

The garage was separate from the family’s residence, and authorities have not reported injuries to Peden’s relatives.

Man Released on Bond as Court Case Moves Forward

The Allen County Prosecutor’s Office charged Peden with felony arson in connection with the fire. During an initial court hearing on July 2, a judge set his bond at $10,000.

Court records show he later posted a surety bond and was released from custody on July 7. He is scheduled to return to court for additional hearings on July 13 and Aug. 31.

The allegations outlined in the charging documents have not been proven in court, and Christopher Michael Peden is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. Prosecutors will present evidence as the criminal case proceeds through the legal system.
