Claremont, California — A heartbreaking tragedy at a California daycare has led to a murder charge against a 17-year-old after authorities say a 4-month-old baby girl suffered fatal injuries while under the facility’s care.
The incident has left the infant’s family searching for answers as police continue investigating what happened inside the daycare home where the child was allegedly attacked.
Baby Girl Suffered Critical Injuries Inside Daycare
According to Claremont police, officers responded to a medical emergency around 11:30 a.m. on June 29 at a residence in the 1400 block of Lynoak Drive.
When first responders arrived, they found the infant seriously injured after she had allegedly been thrown to the floor inside the home, according to investigators.
The baby was first transported to Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center before being transferred to Children’s Hospital of Orange County for specialized treatment.
Despite medical efforts, the 4-month-old girl later died from her injuries, prompting authorities to launch a homicide investigation.
Parents Allege Their Daughter Was Left Unsupervised
The infant’s parents, Jasmyne Cohn and Anthony Owens, believe their daughter was left alone with the teenager accused in the case while she was attending the daycare.
Officials have not publicly identified the suspect because he is a juvenile.
According to the family, Cohn received a phone call while she was at work informing her that she needed to rush to the hospital. When she arrived, she was confronted with devastating news about her daughter’s condition.
“My child had bruises all over her body. Her head was fractured. I lost my daughter due to the negligence of this daycare,” Cohn told KTLA. “He should not have been in a daycare with children. Not just my child, any child.”
The family has continued to raise concerns about the level of supervision provided at the daycare during the incident.
Teen Formally Charged With Murder
Following several days of investigation, Claremont police announced on July 1 that detectives had submitted their homicide case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors subsequently filed one count of murder against the 17-year-old suspect.
The teenager appeared in Pomona Superior Court on July 2 for arraignment. Court records indicate that the case has since been transferred to juvenile court, with the next hearing scheduled for July 17.
Because the accused is under the age of 18, authorities have not released his identity.
