Queens, New York — Authorities are investigating after human remains were discovered inside the chimney of a public school in Queens, prompting a police response just days after students left for summer break.
The unsettling discovery was made Tuesday morning at P.S./I.S. 113 Anthony J. Pranzo, where officials confirmed that the building was unoccupied at the time because classes had already concluded for the school year.
Investigators are now working to determine the identity of the deceased and how the remains ended up inside the school.
Human Remains Found During Summer Closure
According to the New York Police Department, officers responded to the school at approximately 8:59 a.m. on June 30 after receiving a 911 call reporting possible human remains.
When officers arrived, they were informed that the remains had been discovered inside a chimney within the school building.
Police confirmed that no students or school employees were inside the building when the discovery was made. Authorities secured the scene while investigators began examining the area.
At this stage, officials have not released information regarding how long the remains may have been there.
Investigation Focuses on Identity and Cause of Death
The remains have not yet been identified.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an examination to determine both the identity of the individual and the official cause and manner of death.
Police have not announced whether they suspect foul play, and investigators have released few additional details while the investigation continues.
Detectives are expected to review evidence from the scene as they work to establish how the individual came to be inside the chimney.
School Was Closed for Summer
The discovery occurred only days after the school year ended for students. According to the New York City public school calendar, classes concluded for the 2025–2026 academic year on June 26.
School officials noted that the building had already been closed for the summer and was not occupied by students or faculty.
In a statement, New York City Public Schools acknowledged the disturbing discovery and said support would be available for the school community.
“This discovery is deeply upsetting and concerning, and we are making sure the right supports are in place for the entire school community while NYPD investigates.”
Officials also confirmed that no students were present because the building had already closed for planned summer construction work.
Building Scheduled for Repairs
According to city officials, the school is expected to undergo maintenance and infrastructure upgrades during the summer months. Planned work reportedly includes repairs involving the building’s hot water heating system and electrical wiring.
It has not been indicated whether the construction activities played any role in the discovery of the remains. Authorities continue processing the scene while awaiting findings from the medical examiner.
Investigation Remains Active
Police have not released additional information about the circumstances surrounding the discovery or when investigators expect to identify the remains.
As officials continue gathering evidence, the focus remains on determining who the individual was and how they came to be inside the school’s chimney.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
