Columbus, Georgia — A routine Tuesday morning at a Dollar General store turned tragic when a longtime store manager was fatally shot while assisting a customer with a purchase totaling just $1.58, according to investigators.
The victim, Alexis Hill, 44, was a mother of three and grandmother of two whose family says she was simply doing her job when the shooting occurred.
Authorities say the suspected gunman later died following a separate confrontation with law enforcement officers.
Store Manager Shot During Customer Transaction
According to investigators, the incident happened shortly after 10 a.m. at a Dollar General store on Victory Drive in Columbus.
Officials said Hill was ringing up a customer who was purchasing hamburger buns costing $1.58. Authorities allege the customer, later identified as Jerome Willis, 33, handed Hill two crumpled one-dollar bills.
While Hill was reportedly straightening the cash, investigators say Willis stepped aside, produced a firearm, and shot her.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan pronounced Hill dead approximately 45 minutes later.
Family members told local media the victim and suspect did not know each other before the incident.
Suspect Killed During Police Confrontation
Following the shooting, investigators said Willis fled the area. Columbus police later located him in a nearby parking lot.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, officers gave Willis repeated verbal commands, but he allegedly refused to comply. Authorities said a police K-9 was deployed in an attempt to apprehend him.
Investigators allege Willis fired at the police dog and pointed his firearm toward responding officers.
Police then returned fire, striking Willis multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. During the confrontation, one Columbus police officer and the K-9 were also injured.
Officials said both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
