Mount Si, Washington — A hiking trip turned into a terrifying experience for three high school students after they encountered a mother black bear and her cub on a popular Washington trail, leaving two teenagers injured and prompting authorities to temporarily close the area.
The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Mount Si, a well-known hiking destination located about 30 miles east of Seattle. Wildlife officials say the encounter happened roughly 2.7 miles up the trail, where the group unexpectedly crossed paths with the bears.
While the injuries were ultimately not life-threatening, officials described the situation as a frightening reminder of the wildlife encounters that can occur in Washington’s outdoor recreation areas.
Mother Bear Charged Group of Teen Hikers
According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW), three hikers were making their way up the trail when a black bear suddenly charged toward the group.
Authorities later said the animal was believed to be a mother bear accompanied by her cub, a situation that can lead to defensive behavior if the bear perceives a threat.
During the encounter, the bear swiped at one of the teenagers, causing the group to scatter.
The teen became separated from his friends during the chaos. According to reports, the other hikers later told authorities they could hear screaming from the area where the encounter occurred.
Despite the frightening attack, the teenager was eventually able to make his way back to his friends.
Teen Sustains Minor Injuries During Attack
Emergency responders later evaluated the injured teen, who suffered scratches and minor wounds during the encounter.
Authorities said he was transported down the mountain using an ATV before being taken for medical evaluation.
King County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Peter Linde said the injuries were relatively minor considering the circumstances.
“His injuries were very minor, but he was of course terrified,” Linde said.
“The bear tossed him around a little bit, but nothing serious. He’s on his way to the hospital right now to be checked out, get the wounds clean, and maybe get some antibiotics.”
While the physical injuries were not severe, officials acknowledged the emotional impact of such a close encounter with a wild animal.
Second Teen Injured While Escaping
A second member of the hiking group was also hurt during the incident.
According to authorities, the teenager suffered an ankle injury after falling while attempting to flee from the bear. Emergency responders assisted both hikers during the rescue operation.

The group had reportedly been hiking Mount Si for the first time when the incident occurred. Search and rescue officials later praised the teens for several actions that helped responders locate and assist them quickly.
Authorities Close Trail After Additional Bear Reports
Following the initial attack, another group of hikers reported a concerning encounter with what was believed to be the same black bear.
According to WDFW, those hikers said the animal followed them closely for several miles along the trail. Out of caution, officials cleared the area and temporarily closed the trail while wildlife officers attempted to locate the bear.
The closure was implemented to reduce the risk of additional encounters involving visitors.
Black Bear Attacks Remain Rare in Washington
Although the incident attracted significant attention, wildlife officials emphasized that black bear attacks on humans remain extremely uncommon in Washington State.
According to WDFW, only one fatal black bear attack has been recorded in the state, occurring in 1974. Since 1970, there have been only about 20 documented black bear encounters resulting in human injuries statewide.
Search and rescue officials expressed gratitude that the situation did not result in more serious injuries and praised the hikers for staying calm and cooperating with responders.
Officials also noted that carrying communication devices and hiking with companions helped ensure assistance arrived quickly when it was needed most.
