Cherry Hill, New Jersey — A man accused of traveling across the country to carry out a deadly attack on a respected New Jersey veterinarian has admitted to murder, bringing a significant development in a case that shocked both the local community and the victim’s family.
Prosecutors announced that Cristian Custodio-Aquino, 28, pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the death of Dr. Michael Anthony, 45, a veterinarian known for his compassion and dedication to animals and their owners.
Authorities say the killing stemmed from jealousy after Custodio-Aquino learned that Anthony was dating his former boyfriend.
Prosecutors Say Attack Was Planned
According to investigators, the fatal incident occurred on the morning of Dec. 10, 2024, outside Anthony’s home in Cherry Hill.
Police responded to the residence shortly after 7 a.m. and discovered Anthony suffering from multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, and body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Court proceedings revealed that prosecutors believe the attack was carefully planned.
They alleged that Custodio-Aquino drove from Oregon to New Jersey and waited outside Anthony’s home before launching the assault.
When Anthony stepped outside for a morning walk, prosecutors say the suspect attacked him and then fled the area. Assistant Camden County Prosecutor Kevin Moran described the violence as deliberate and calculated.
“This is a murder,” Moran said in court proceedings. “This was a brutal, violent attack. This defendant assassinated Dr. Michael Anthony.”
Teenage Son Made Heartbreaking Discovery
After Anthony failed to return home, his teenage son became concerned and went outside to look for him.
According to reports presented in court, the teenager discovered his father lying face down in the front yard and immediately called 911.
The tragic discovery added another layer of heartbreak to a case that deeply affected family members, friends, colleagues, and clients.
Investigators later recovered key evidence linking the suspect to the crime scene, including a pair of transition eyeglasses found near Anthony’s body that allegedly contained Custodio-Aquino’s DNA.
Authorities also located the suspect’s Nissan Altima, which investigators said contained the victim’s blood.
Suspect Captured After Months on the Run
Following the attack, prosecutors say Custodio-Aquino fled New Jersey and traveled across the country. The search lasted approximately three months before authorities tracked him down and arrested him in Fresno, California.
Officials said he remained in custody after his arrest.
Court records indicate investigators also discovered evidence suggesting the suspect attempted to sell his vehicle while on the run and searched online for news coverage related to the homicide.
The guilty plea now removes the need for a lengthy trial and moves the case into the sentencing phase. Custodio-Aquino is expected to receive a 30-year prison sentence during a hearing scheduled for July 9.
Community Remembers Beloved Veterinarian
While the criminal case moves toward its conclusion, many continue remembering Anthony for the life he lived rather than the circumstances of his death.

As the owner of Haddon Vet in Haddon Heights, Anthony earned a reputation for providing exceptional care to animals while also supporting worried pet owners.
His obituary described him as a veterinarian whose compassion extended beyond medicine.
“His colleagues and clients respected him for his expertise, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of animals.”
Outside of work, Anthony’s greatest joy was his family, particularly his two sons. He also enjoyed jogging and had a deep appreciation for music.
Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay said the guilty plea represents an important step toward justice.
“While no outcome can undo the profound loss suffered by Dr. Anthony’s family and loved ones, we hope it provides a measure of closure as we remember Dr. Anthony’s lasting legacy of compassion and dedicated service to the communities he faithfully served.”
As the case nears its final chapter, loved ones continue to honor Anthony’s memory and the impact he had on countless families and pets throughout the community.
