New York, New York — Millions of people across the East Coast are preparing for a dramatic shift in the weather as a powerful cold front is expected to bring widespread thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and cooler temperatures this weekend, offering relief from days of intense heat, high humidity and smoky skies.
Forecasters say the storm system will move across the region from Friday through Sunday, replacing the persistent heat dome that has fueled uncomfortable conditions across much of the eastern United States.
Heat and Wildfire Smoke Continue Before Pattern Changes
The East Coast is expected to remain hot and humid through Friday, with many communities continuing to experience above-average temperatures.
Adding to the unusual weather pattern is Canadian wildfire smoke, which has spread across portions of the region.
Meteorologists say the smoke has created uncertainty in daily temperatures because the thick haze can block and scatter sunlight before it reaches the ground, limiting daytime heating in some locations.
Even with the smoky skies, uncomfortable humidity is expected to persist until the approaching cold front arrives.
Strong Storms Expected to Sweep Across the Region
Beginning Friday, thunderstorms are forecast to develop across parts of the Ohio Valley before expanding into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast throughout the weekend.
Forecasters warn that many of the storms could become severe, producing frequent lightning, torrential downpours, damaging wind gusts and large hail.
The greatest severe weather threat is expected on Saturday, when much of the Northeast and southeastern Great Lakes will be under a Level 2 out of 5 severe storm risk.
Meteorologists expect an organized line of storms to develop across western portions of the Northeast around midday before pushing east through the evening.
Initially, large hail will be the primary concern, but as the storms organize into a squall line, damaging straight-line winds are expected to become the dominant threat.
Virginia and North Carolina Could See Severe Weather Sunday
As the cold front continues moving south and east, additional severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across western Virginia and parts of North Carolina on Sunday.
Those areas are also included in a Level 2 of 5 severe weather outlook, with forecasters warning that damaging winds, heavy rainfall and isolated hail will be possible.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions throughout the weekend.
Cooler Air Arrives as Rainy Pattern Continues
Beyond the threat of severe weather, the approaching cold front is expected to provide a welcome break from the recent stretch of oppressive heat and humidity.
The system should also help improve air quality by pushing much of the lingering wildfire smoke away from the East Coast.
Meanwhile, New York City could extend an unusual weather streak. According to forecasters, Central Park has recorded measurable rainfall every weekend since the beginning of June, and current forecasts suggest this weekend may continue that pattern.
While many residents will welcome cooler temperatures, officials remind the public that severe thunderstorms can develop quickly and may produce dangerous conditions, especially during outdoor weekend activities.
