St. Petersburg, Florida — A 47-year-old St. Petersburg city employee and mother of four was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in what police believe was a targeted domestic-related attack, while the suspected gunman was later taken into custody following a dramatic standoff along Interstate 75 in Lee County.
The fatal shooting has left city employees and the local community mourning as investigators continue working to determine exactly what led to the deadly encounter.
Police Say Victim Was Targeted
According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, officers responded around 12:35 p.m. to the 4100 block of 12th Avenue South, where they found the woman suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
She later died from her injuries.
Police Chief Anthony Holloway said investigators believe the victim was specifically targeted and that the shooting was domestic in nature, emphasizing that it was not considered a random act of violence.
The victim had worked for the City of St. Petersburg for approximately 10 years, according to police.
Investigators said an argument reportedly occurred before the suspect climbed into the cab of a front loader and opened fire.
Authorities have not yet identified the victim publicly.
Suspect Located Hours Later in Lee County
Several hours after the shooting, the investigation shifted to Interstate 75 in Lee County, where Florida Highway Patrol troopers located the suspect around 4 p.m.
Officials said the suspect had barricaded himself inside a vehicle, leading to a tense standoff that resulted in gunfire being exchanged.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody after suffering serious injuries and was transported to Gulf Coast Hospital, where he remains under police guard.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now investigating the circumstances surrounding the highway standoff.
Several Questions Remain Unanswered
While authorities have confirmed the suspect is in custody, investigators have not released many details about the confrontation.
Officials have not confirmed whether the suspect was struck by gunfire from a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, a Lee County deputy, or if his injuries were self-inflicted.
Police have also not released the suspect’s identity, nor have they disclosed how many shots were fired during either the fatal shooting in St. Petersburg or the subsequent standoff in Lee County.
In addition, investigators have not confirmed whether the victim was actively performing her city job duties when the shooting occurred.

City Employees Receive Support as Investigation Continues
Following the tragedy, the City of St. Petersburg arranged grief counselors for employees on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday to help coworkers cope with the loss.
As detectives continue gathering evidence, officials say the investigation remains active and additional information will be released once it becomes available.
For now, police maintain that the incident appears to have been an isolated domestic-related attack, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
