St. Louis Park, Minnesota — A Twin Cities eye clinic has become the first in the United States to offer WaveLight Plus LASIK, a next-generation laser vision correction procedure that uses advanced eye mapping technology to create highly personalized treatments.
Doctors say the innovation marks another major step forward in LASIK, while one of the first patients says the results have completely changed the way he sees the world.
First U.S. Patients Receive WaveLight Plus LASIK
The procedure is now available at OVO LASIK + Lens in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, which was selected as the first clinic in the country to introduce the technology.
Among the first patients was 26-year-old Sean Nolan, a ski racer and coach who had relied on glasses for most of his life because of astigmatism.
According to Nolan, the improvement was almost immediate. He recalled getting off the treatment table, looking at a clock across the room, and realizing he could read it clearly without his glasses.
That instant clarity, he said, confirmed the procedure had worked.
New Technology Maps Every Eye Differently
Unlike traditional LASIK procedures, WaveLight Plus LASIK uses ray-tracing technology and collects more than 1,500 data points from each eye before treatment.
According to Dr. Mark Lobanoff, founder and medical director of OVO LASIK + Lens, the system follows thousands of individual beams of light as they travel through different parts of the eye.
This allows surgeons to identify subtle differences in how light is focused across the cornea and create a treatment plan unique to each eye.
Dr. Lobanoff explained that no two procedures are exactly alike, because every patient’s eyes process light differently.
LASIK Has Advanced Significantly Over the Years
Dr. Lobanoff, who helped develop the technology with Alcon, said LASIK has evolved dramatically since he performed his first procedure 27 years ago.
He noted that many concerns people still associate with LASIK come from the early days of the procedure, when equipment was far less advanced.
Today’s technology, he said, is more accurate, more precise, and safer, giving patients greater confidence in both the procedure and the results.
The surgery itself remains quick and virtually painless, with many patients able to drive the following day after their vision improves.
Patient Says He Can Now See Details He Never Noticed
Following the procedure, Nolan said his vision improved to 20/15, allowing him to notice details he had never seen before.
He described the experience as discovering an entirely new level of clarity, saying he hadn’t realized how much visual detail he had been missing.
As both a skier and coach, he believes the sharper vision will benefit him in both everyday life and on the slopes.
More Precise Vision Correction Comes at a Higher Cost
While WaveLight Plus LASIK cannot guarantee permanent vision correction for every patient, doctors say its personalized approach is intended to provide more precise results and potentially reduce the need for enhancement procedures later.
The new treatment typically costs a few hundred dollars more per eye than traditional LASIK, although pricing can vary depending on promotions and individual treatment plans.
As more clinics begin adopting the technology, eye specialists will continue monitoring long-term outcomes to determine whether the advanced customization delivers lasting improvements over conventional LASIK procedures.
