Chino Hills, California — New details have emerged in a shocking California kidnapping case after investigators revealed that the primary suspect and the victim shared a previous professional relationship in the commercial real estate industry before the deadly encounter that ended with one man dead, another suspect in custody, and a deputy-involved shooting.
Authorities continue to investigate what led to the violent incident, including the circumstances surrounding a suspicious power outage at the victim’s home.
Suspect and Victim Previously Worked Together
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, 67-year-old Zhengfeng Bo and 60-year-old Shukur Aikebaer knew each other through a prior working relationship before the alleged kidnapping and fatal shooting on July 29.
Public records indicate the two men held executive positions in at least two limited liability companies (LLCs) involved in commercial real estate. Those companies are reportedly connected to ongoing civil lawsuits.
Records show Zhengfeng served as chief executive officer, while Aikebaer was listed as chief financial officer and secretary.
Aikebaer was also a husband and father of three daughters, according to local reports.
Attorney Says Incident Came as a Shock
Zhengfeng Bo’s attorney, Michael Chen, said he was surprised by the allegations involving his client.
According to Chen, one of the ongoing lawsuits involved a $20 million apartment complex in Pasadena, where Zhengfeng had sought legal action against former property managers over control of the development.
Chen said he had never seen behavior from his client that suggested violence.
He explained that there had not appeared to be an adversarial relationship between Zhengfeng and Aikebaer, though he acknowledged that something may have happened before the incident that has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Authorities have not identified a motive, and investigators continue working to determine what led to the alleged kidnapping.
Investigation Began After Suspicious Power Outage
Detectives said the incident began when the electricity at Aikebaer’s home suddenly went out.
According to investigators, Aikebaer stepped outside to inspect the home’s electrical panel when he was allegedly shot and kidnapped.
The Sheriff’s Department said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the power outage to determine whether it was intentionally caused.
Deputies later responded to reports of gunfire and someone yelling for help in a Chino Hills neighborhood.
Deputies Encountered Suspects During Pursuit
Authorities said deputies located Zhengfeng driving the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Instead, investigators say a short vehicle pursuit followed before the vehicle stopped on Wandering Ridge Drive.
Deputies ordered both occupants to exit the vehicle.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, 66-year-old Jianquan Bo complied with commands and was immediately taken into custody.
However, investigators allege that Zhengfeng Bo ignored deputies’ orders, walked to the open trunk of the vehicle, and fired a gun into the trunk, where Aikebaer had reportedly been held.
Deputies then fatally shot Zhengfeng Bo during the confrontation. Authorities later confirmed that Shukur Aikebaer died at the scene.
Murder Investigation Continues
Investigators have charged Jianquan Bo with murder and kidnapping, and he remains in custody without bail.
According to Zhengfeng’s attorney, the two suspects were relatives, though authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding their relationship or their alleged roles in the crime.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the case and is asking anyone with information to contact homicide detectives.
Officials have not announced whether additional charges could be filed as the investigation remains active.
