Chicago, Illinois — Illinois has already made weather history in 2026, setting a new statewide tornado record months before the year is over as meteorologists continue assessing damage from recent severe storms.
The latest figures show 149 tornadoes have been confirmed across Illinois so far this year, surpassing the previous annual record of 142 tornadoes established in 2024. Even more remarkable, the total could continue climbing as National Weather Service survey teams review damage from the powerful Father’s Day storm system that swept through parts of the state.
The milestone comes as residents enjoy a brief stretch of calm weather before additional storm chances return later this week.
Illinois Sets New Statewide Tornado Record
The new tornado record underscores just how active the severe weather season has been across Illinois.
According to National Weather Service data, the state’s official tornado count now stands at 149 confirmed tornadoes, making 2026 the most active tornado year ever recorded in Illinois history.
Officials noted that the total does not yet include tornadoes that may have occurred during the deadly Father’s Day storms, meaning the final number could climb even higher in the coming weeks.
The historic season reflects a year marked by repeated rounds of severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, hail, and tornado outbreaks across the Midwest.
Chicago Area Experiencing Unusually High Tornado Activity
The Chicago metropolitan area has also experienced a significant increase in strong tornadoes this year. Meteorologists report that five tornadoes rated EF-2 or stronger have already been confirmed in the region during 2026.
The last time the Chicago area experienced that many strong tornadoes in a single year was 2008, when six EF-2 or stronger tornadoes were documented.
For comparison, the area typically averages just one EF-2 or stronger tornado per year. The all-time record remains 10 strong tornadoes, which was established in 1965.
Meanwhile, within the National Weather Service Chicago forecast area, 50 tornadoes have been confirmed this year, far exceeding the annual average of 10.
Last year, the same forecast area recorded only 25 tornadoes throughout the entire calendar year.
Indiana Also Seeing Elevated Tornado Numbers
Illinois is not the only state experiencing an active severe weather season. Neighboring Indiana has recorded 56 tornadoes so far in 2026, according to National Weather Service data.
Like Illinois, Indiana’s total does not yet include tornadoes that may have formed during the recent Father’s Day storm outbreak.
The elevated numbers across the region highlight the unusually active weather pattern that has persisted through much of the spring and early summer.
Storm Chances Return Midweek
After a pleasant start to the week featuring sunshine, low humidity, and temperatures in the 70s, forecasters are once again monitoring the potential for thunderstorms.
Wednesday currently appears to offer the best chance for storm development, although forecasters say the threat of severe weather remains relatively low at this time.
Additional scattered storm chances may develop Thursday, though coverage is expected to be more isolated. High temperatures are forecast to remain in the upper 70s through the middle of the week.
Summer Heat Set to Arrive
While storm chances remain in the forecast, attention is also turning toward a significant warming trend expected this weekend and early next week.
Temperatures are projected to reach around 80 degrees on Saturday before climbing sharply on Sunday. Some locations could approach 90 degrees by the end of the weekend as warmer air moves into the region.
Meteorologists are also tracking the possibility of overnight showers and thunderstorms Sunday night into Monday as a warm front advances through the Midwest.
Once that system passes, forecasters expect summer-like conditions to take hold, with highs reaching the lower 90s and humidity levels increasing substantially.
If current projections hold, the upcoming heat could mark the beginning of an extended stretch of hot weather across the Chicago area.
