Brooklyn, New York — A 17-year-old boy was shot in the head and killed Wednesday evening in East New York, leaving grieving relatives and neighbors gathered near the scene as gospel music played and the community struggled to understand the violence.
Police said Ahmir Jordan was shot around 8:20 p.m. on New Lots Avenue outside a business. Officers responding to the scene found the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Jordan was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the NYPD.
The deadly shooting quickly drew family members, neighbors and other loved ones to the area, where people mourned the teenager’s death late into the evening.
Heartbroken Woman Cries Out at Scene
An older woman was seen crying behind police crime scene tape after the shooting. In the aftermath, she repeatedly questioned why the young victim had to die before her.
“Why did he have to die before me? I didn’t want him to die before me. Why, oh why?” the heartbroken woman cried.
Loved ones later gathered near the location and played gospel music as they mourned Jordan. The emotional response highlighted the shock surrounding the teenager’s death, particularly because of his young age.
Neighbor Calls Teen ‘A Baby’
A woman who has lived in the neighborhood for 12 years said she could not remember a shooting happening in the area for years. She expressed sympathy for Jordan’s family and said no parent should have to experience the loss of a child, especially one who was only 17.
“No mother should have to bury their child. Especially 17 years old,” the neighbor said.
She described the tragedy as heartbreaking and imagined the pain of a mother being forced to identify her own child after a shooting.
“My heart goes out to that family,” she said. “That’s a baby. He was a baby.”
Shelter Worker Says He Heard Gunshots
A worker at a homeless shelter located across the street from the shooting said he heard the gunfire from inside the building. The unidentified employee said he was inside when the shots rang out and immediately ducked along with others.
Afterward, he went outside to see what had happened. The worker said he saw two men running down New Lots Avenue. Based on their appearance, he believed they looked young, possibly teenagers.
His account could potentially become part of the investigation as detectives work to determine who was responsible for the shooting and what led to the deadly confrontation.
Police Investigation Continues
A 35-year-old man was also taken to a hospital after he ran into a glass shelf during the incident, police said. His injuries were described as minor.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation Wednesday night.
No arrests had been made as of that evening, according to police.
The investigation is expected to focus on identifying the shooter or shooters, determining what happened immediately before the gunfire and establishing a possible motive.
For Jordan’s loved ones, however, the immediate focus remained on mourning a teenager whose life ended suddenly.
