Creedmoor, North Carolina — A North Carolina high school community is mourning the loss of Emma Wallace, a student athlete who was killed in a car crash Monday on U.S. Highway 15.
The Creedmoor Police Department identified Wallace as the victim of the Aug. 17 crash and confirmed that she was the daughter of Creedmoor School Resource Officer Corporal Tony Wallace.
Her death has left classmates, teammates, teachers and coaches grieving as they remember a young woman who played an active role in her school community.
Emma Wallace Remembered as Athlete and Teammate
Wallace attended South Granville High School in Creedmoor, where she participated in both volleyball and softball. School officials said her impact extended well beyond athletics.
“Emma’s loss is being deeply felt by her classmates, teammates, coaches, teachers, school staff, and the many people whose lives she touched,” the Creedmoor Police Department said in a news release.
The department added that her presence would be remembered by those who knew and loved her. Creedmoor Police Chief Troy Wheless also offered condolences to the Wallace family and the wider community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Wallace family, Emma’s friends and teammates, and everyone in our community who is grieving this devastating loss,” Wheless said.
Crash Investigation Underway
Police have not released additional details about exactly what caused Monday’s crash.
A witness told that Emma was driving southbound on Highway 15 when her vehicle collided with another vehicle traveling northbound.
The driver of the other vehicle reportedly remained at the scene.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision, and no further details about possible contributing factors were immediately provided. South Granville High School said Monday that Emma was the only member of the school involved in the incident.
School Says “Our Hearts Are Broken”
As news of Wallace’s death spread, South Granville High School issued a statement expressing grief over the loss of one of its students.
“Emma was a teammate to many and a vibrant member of our school,” the school said. “Her loss is felt by every member of our school community. Our hearts are broken.”
The school also thanked the broader Granville County community for the support offered to students and staff following the tragedy.
Officials said the school district would continue providing support services to students and staff as they process the loss. Granville County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Stan Winborne also expressed his condolences.
“Thank you all for sending love and prayers to the family and to the South Granville High School community,” Winborne said. “This tremendous loss will be felt deeply by so many.”
Volleyball Coach Remembers Emma’s Personality
Emma’s teammates and coaches are now left remembering the personality behind the athlete. Her volleyball coach, Jordan Rhodes, described Emma as someone who could make people around her laugh.
“She could always make everyone laugh,” Rhodes said. “She made me laugh so much. She made her other teammates laugh so much.”
Rhodes encouraged those mourning Emma to focus on the positive memories she created with her teammates.
“I just want everyone, when they think about her, to just think of all the good memories that we shared with her and how much of an impact she really had on our team last year,” Rhodes said.
The coach added that Emma had made a significant impact on the team, highlighting the close connection she had with those around her.
Community Rallies Around Wallace Family
The loss has brought together the South Granville High School and Creedmoor communities, with officials emphasizing the importance of supporting Emma’s family, friends and classmates during the difficult days ahead.
Her involvement in two school sports and her relationships with teammates, coaches and teachers mean that many members of the school community are personally affected by her death.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, while those who knew Emma are focusing on remembering her life and the impact she had on others.
For her teammates and friends, the memories of her laughter, athleticism and ability to bring people together will remain part of her legacy.
