Victorville, California — Two teenagers lost their lives Friday night after a three-car collision that authorities say involved vehicles traveling at high speeds and ended with one driver fleeing the scene.
The deadly crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. near Elmwood Drive and Ridgecrest Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly what led to the collision and whether additional factors played a role.
Investigators Reconstruct Fatal Collision
According to the CHP, a yellow Chevrolet Camaro and a black Dodge Charger were traveling northbound on Ridgecrest Road at “high rates of speed.”
At the same time, a green Acura TL pulled out to make a left turn.
The movements of the three vehicles resulted in a violent three-car collision. The Acura was carrying two teenagers, both of whom died at the scene.
The crash has prompted an ongoing investigation as authorities work to establish the sequence of events and determine the circumstances surrounding the vehicles’ speeds and movements.
17-Year-Old Victorville Girl Identified
The driver of the Acura was identified as 17-year-old Maddalyn Dailey of Victorville, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner.
A 16-year-old passenger from Hesperia was also killed. Authorities have not yet publicly released the passenger’s name. The deaths have left families and friends mourning two young lives lost in a crash that unfolded in a matter of seconds.
The CHP has not indicated whether the teenagers were traveling to or from a particular destination before the collision.
Camaro Driver Flees the Scene
The crash became a hit-and-run investigation after the driver of the Chevrolet Camaro ran away from the scene, according to the CHP. Meanwhile, the driver of the black Dodge Charger remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fleeing driver’s actions. It remains unclear whether investigators have identified or located the Chevrolet driver.
The fact that one driver left the scene adds another layer to an already tragic crash and could become an important part of the ongoing investigation.
Alcohol or Drugs Not Yet Confirmed
Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. Officials have not announced any additional contributing factors as the investigation continues.
Crash investigators are expected to examine vehicle evidence, witness accounts and other available information to reconstruct what happened before the three vehicles collided.
Authorities are also likely to examine the circumstances surrounding the reported high speeds and the Camaro driver’s departure from the scene.
CHP Offers Condolences to Families
The California Highway Patrol expressed condolences to the families and friends of the two teenagers killed in the crash.
“The CHP extends its condolences to the family and friends of those who lost their lives in this tragic crash,” Capt. Cameron Broyles, commander of the CHP’s Victorville Area, said in a statement.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not released further details about potential charges or whether the fleeing driver has been located.
For the families of Maddalyn Dailey and the unidentified 16-year-old passenger, the investigation now follows an unimaginable loss as they wait for more answers about what caused the deadly collision.
