Kentucky Woman Accused of Driving 100 MPH Before Fatal Crash Says Child Unbuckling Seatbelt Distracted Her

Trimble County, Kentucky — A 29-year-old woman is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say she was driving more than 100 mph with three young children in her car when she crossed the center line of a highway and crashed into an oncoming pickup truck, killing its driver.

Mary May has been charged with reckless homicide in the death of 39-year-old David Logan Jr., along with reckless driving, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree assault, according to jail records.

Deadly Crash Happened on US-421

The crash happened on the morning of June 16 on US-421 in Trimble County, an area northeast of Louisville. Authorities say May was behind the wheel of a red 2012 Volvo S60 carrying three children — a 5-year-old and two 4-year-olds.

At the same time, Logan was driving a black 1987 Ford Ranger pickup truck. According to Kentucky State Police, May allegedly crossed the center line while traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into Logan’s truck.

Emergency crews responded to the scene, where Logan was pronounced dead.

May suffered serious injuries and was transported by helicopter to a hospital. The three children were also flown to a children’s hospital after reportedly suffering serious injuries.

Children Suffered Serious Injuries

The children reportedly sustained several significant injuries in the crash.

According to local reports, one child suffered a concussion and brain swelling, while another sustained a brain bleed and a broken bone. The third child reportedly suffered multiple spinal fractures.

May and two of the children were later released from the hospital, according to reports.

May was reportedly arrested late last month and appeared in court Tuesday while using a wheelchair as she continued recovering from broken bones and other injuries suffered in the collision.

Defense Offers Different Explanation for Crash

May’s attorney reportedly suggested that the crash happened after one of the children unbuckled their seatbelt, distracting May while she was driving.

Authorities, however, reportedly have a different account of what happened immediately before the collision. Investigators contend that May was attempting to pass three vehicles when she crossed the center line.

Police also say May was traveling at more than 100 mph when she struck Logan’s pickup. Authorities have not yet determined whether May was under the influence of drugs, alcohol or another substance at the time of the crash.

The competing accounts could become significant as the criminal case moves forward, particularly as investigators continue examining what May was doing in the moments before the fatal collision.

Victim Remembered as Talented and Compassionate

Logan’s death has left friends and family mourning a man remembered for his creativity, generosity and strong relationships.

His obituary described him as “an immensely talented DJ, graphic designer, marketing expert” who enjoyed traveling, hiking, boating, snowboarding and riding four-wheelers.

But his loved ones emphasized that Logan’s greatest joy came from spending time with the people closest to him. The obituary remembered him as “a man of tremendous heart” and a compassionate friend who supported people around him.

It also described his personality, saying his “million dollar smile could lighten any room” and that his sense of humor could turn ordinary moments into joyful occasions.

His family said Logan’s authenticity left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

As May continues recovering from her injuries, the criminal case will determine how prosecutors proceed with the charges stemming from the crash that claimed Logan’s life and seriously injured three children.
