Sea Isle City, New Jersey — A routine morning walk along the Jersey Shore turned into a disturbing discovery when a woman encountered 29 dead sharks scattered across roughly 10 blocks of beach.
Michelle Greenling was walking along the beach in Sea Isle City on Wednesday, Aug. 12, when she noticed several dead sharks lying along the shoreline.
At first, the sight did not immediately seem unusual.
Greenling told that seeing the first few dead sharks was “too surprising.” But as she continued walking and encountered more, her concern quickly grew.
By the time she had walked across approximately 10 blocks, she had counted 29 dead sharks.
‘I Knew Something Was Up’
Greenling said the situation became increasingly alarming after she encountered the fourth and fifth dead sharks. At that point, she said she “knew something was up.” Some of the sharks reportedly had red markings on their bellies, adding to the unsettling appearance of the scene.
“It was definitely concerning. I was concerned about the water. I was concerned about the sharks,” Greenling said.
Her comments reflect the questions raised by the unusual number of dead marine animals appearing along the shoreline at roughly the same time. The discovery also prompted questions about whether the deaths were connected to something occurring in the surrounding waters.
Experts Identify Sharks as Young Dogfish
Stephen Nagiewicz, an adjunct professor of marine science at Stockton University, told that the sharks were believed to be young dogfish sharks.
Dogfish are relatively small sharks commonly found in coastal waters, making their presence in the region itself unusual. However, the sudden appearance of dozens of dead animals raised questions about what may have caused the deaths.
Nagiewicz offered several possible explanations, while emphasizing that the exact cause was not immediately known.
Changing Tides Could Have Played a Role
One possibility is that the sharks became stranded as tides changed. According to Nagiewicz, shifting water conditions could potentially leave young sharks trapped in shallow areas or along the shoreline.
He also considered whether there could have been something in the water that affected the animals. However, he said that explanation appeared less likely, noting that people had not reportedly been affected.
“A couple of things it could be. There’s something in the water, and they got sick and died. That’s probably unlikely since people haven’t been affected,” Nagiewicz told 6ABC.
Could Fishermen Have Dumped the Sharks Offshore?
Another theory raised by Nagiewicz was that the sharks could have been dumped offshore by fishermen. If that occurred, the animals could potentially have been carried toward the shoreline by currents and tides.
At this stage, however, there was no confirmed explanation for why so many dead sharks appeared along the Sea Isle City beach.
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection was contacted about the reported shark deaths as officials and marine experts sought to determine what happened.
For beachgoers, the discovery serves as an unsettling reminder that unusual wildlife activity can sometimes provide clues about changing conditions in coastal waters. Until officials determine the cause of the deaths, visitors may want to pay close attention to any warnings or guidance issued by local authorities.
