Clark County, Nevada — A routine Lyft pickup allegedly turned into a terrifying ordeal for a Nevada man after his wedding ring became caught in a vehicle’s door handle, leaving him dragged along the pavement for what his lawsuit describes as approximately 300 feet.
Passenger Says Lyft Driver Accelerated While He Was Trapped
According to a lawsuit filed by David Morris of Clark County, the incident occurred in August 2024 when he was waiting for a Lyft driver to pick him up.
The lawsuit reportedly claims that when the vehicle arrived, the doors were locked, preventing Morris from getting inside.
Morris allegedly knocked on one of the vehicle’s windows in an attempt to get the driver’s attention. According to the court filing, the situation quickly became dangerous when the vehicle allegedly began moving.
The lawsuit claims the driver accelerated at a high rate of speed while Morris’ left hand remained caught in the door handle by his wedding ring.
Man Says He Was Dragged Across the Pavement
Morris alleges that the vehicle continued moving while his hand was trapped. According to the lawsuit, he was dragged and slammed against the pavement before eventually managing to free himself.
The alleged distance was approximately 300 feet — nearly the length of a football field. The lawsuit accuses Lyft and the unidentified driver, referred to as John Doe, of negligence in connection with the incident.
Morris reportedly claims that Lyft should have known the driver was “incompetent, unfit and dangerous.” The lawsuit is seeking more than $30,000 in damages for the injuries Morris says he suffered during the incident.
Lyft Declines to Discuss Specific Allegations
The case has placed questions about driver safety and company screening practices under scrutiny.
When contacted about the lawsuit, a Lyft spokesperson said the company could not comment on the specifics of ongoing litigation. Because the lawsuit is still pending, the allegations have not been established as facts in court.
Lyft Has Driver Requirements in Nevada
Lyft’s driver requirements in Nevada include several eligibility and screening standards.
According to the company’s stated requirements, prospective drivers must have a valid driver’s license, be at least 25 years old, and pass criminal background and driving-history checks.
Certain criminal convictions can disqualify applicants, including offenses involving violence and sex crimes, among other serious offenses. Drivers also must obtain a state business license, while vehicles must meet specific age and safety requirements.
Lyft says eligible vehicles in Nevada must be 2010 models or newer, have four doors, and contain five to eight seat belts, including the driver’s.
Lawsuit Puts Focus on Passenger Safety
For Morris, the lawsuit represents an attempt to seek compensation following an unusual accident that allegedly left him injured.
The circumstances described in the complaint also highlight how quickly an ordinary rideshare pickup can become dangerous when a passenger is physically connected to a moving vehicle.
The case remains pending, and the unidentified driver has not been publicly named or given an opportunity to respond through the court proceedings.
As the lawsuit moves forward, questions about what happened during the pickup, how the vehicle was operated, and whether Lyft bears responsibility will ultimately be addressed through the legal process.
