Spring Hill, Florida — A Florida sheriff’s deputy allegedly turned a dispute with his former girlfriend into a deadly confrontation after waiting outside her home and confronting her in front of her two children, authorities said. The woman was allegedly forced into his vehicle and later found dead alongside the deputy in what officials described as an apparent murder-suicide.
The children, ages 12 and 9, were left without their mother after what had begun as a family day at the beach.
Deputy Confronted Ex After Beach Trip
According to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, the woman and her two children arrived at their home in the 16800 block of Platinum Drive at approximately 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Waiting outside was Deputy Troy Savetz, a 14-year veteran of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.
An argument reportedly began between Savetz and his former girlfriend. Authorities said Savetz allegedly snatched the woman’s cellphone during the confrontation.
The sheriff said the dispute apparently involved Savetz wanting his television set back. The situation quickly escalated when the mother reportedly instructed her children to go inside and call 911.
Children Witnessed Their Mother’s Kidnapping
According to authorities, the children followed their mother’s instructions and contacted emergency services.
Investigators said Savetz then allegedly forced the woman into his rented vehicle and drove away with her. Sheriff Nocco praised the older child for remaining calm enough to provide important information to dispatchers and authorities.
He called the girl “extremely brave”, saying the information she provided helped law enforcement identify Savetz and begin tracking him.
Nocco also told reporters that the children’s mother would be “proud” of them for doing exactly what she had asked when the situation became dangerous.
Police Find Both Dead Inside Vehicle
Authorities eventually located the vehicle. By the time officers reached it, both Savetz and the woman were dead.
Investigators believe Savetz died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while the woman had been fatally shot. The sheriff’s office has not publicly identified the woman.
The tragedy left her two children facing the loss of their mother at the beginning of what should have been a new school year.
Sheriff Says Children Went From Joy to Trauma
Sheriff Nocco expressed particular concern for the two children, noting that they should have been preparing to return to school after spending a day enjoying time at the beach.
Instead, he said, they went “from the best day of their lives probably to the worst day of their lives.” The children are now left to cope with the loss of their mother after witnessing the frightening events outside their home.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of the older child’s decision to immediately call 911 rather than confronting Savetz.
Officials Describe Relationship as Tumultuous
Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri described Savetz’s relationship with the woman as tumultuous.
Gualtieri said the deputy appeared to have chosen “a permanent solution to a temporary problem” when the disagreement escalated into deadly violence.
The sheriff expressed disbelief that an argument over a television set could ultimately lead to such a devastating outcome.
“This was so stupid,” Gualtieri said, while acknowledging that the television dispute likely represented deeper relationship problems.
He said the alleged decision to take a firearm, kidnap the woman and kill her ultimately subjected her children to an unimaginable trauma.
Savetz Had Long Law Enforcement Career
Savetz had served with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years and worked in its marine unit. Before joining the Florida agency, he had served with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
The allegations have now cast a devastating shadow over his law enforcement career as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The children are now left to begin a new chapter without their mother, after a confrontation that authorities say should never have escalated to violence.
