Monterey County, California — Residents across parts of California and Nevada are facing urgent evacuation orders as multiple wildfires continue to spread through dry western landscapes, threatening homes, roads and other critical areas. Fire officials are battling difficult conditions while authorities warn residents in affected zones not to wait until flames are close before leaving.
Timber Fire Forces Evacuations in California
In California, the Timber Fire has prompted mandatory evacuations in parts of Monterey County, including areas around Big Sur.
The fire has grown rapidly since it began and has reached roughly 2,500 to 3,000 acres, with containment remaining at only 5%. Officials say the blaze is threatening hundreds of structures and has already forced closures and evacuations around several well-known Big Sur destinations.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office urged residents in evacuation areas to load their families, pets and emergency supplies and to take important documents and records if they can do so safely.
Officials also emphasized that residents should use the available time to prepare before conditions become more dangerous.
Highway 1 Closed in Fire Zone
The wildfire has also affected State Route 1, a major coastal highway through the Big Sur region.
The California Highway Patrol announced closures along portions of the highway as firefighters work to protect communities and keep evacuation routes available.
Several state parks and businesses in the region have also closed because of the growing threat. Officials have urged visitors to stay away from affected areas and keep roadways clear for emergency crews.

Nevada Fires Trigger More Evacuation Orders
Meanwhile, communities in Washoe County, Nevada, are dealing with the rapidly expanding Bug and Stallion fires.
Authorities have issued evacuation orders for areas north of Winnemucca Ranch Road toward the junction of State Routes 445 and 446.
Officials have directed evacuees to travel south on State Route 445. State Route 446 has been closed in both directions at the junction because of the Stallion Fire.
The situation around the Bug Fire has become particularly serious as flames have expanded across a large area and evacuation zones continue to change.
Residents Urged Not to Delay Leaving
Emergency officials are reminding residents that wildfire conditions can change rapidly, particularly when winds increase or flames reach areas with heavy vegetation.
People living under evacuation orders are being encouraged to leave immediately rather than waiting for additional warnings.
Families are also being urged to prepare medications, identification, important documents, food, water and supplies for pets or livestock when possible.
For residents who need additional assistance leaving, officials say arrangements should be made as early as possible.
