Myrtle Beach, South Carolina — A heroic rescue at a popular South Carolina beach ended in tragedy after a Good Samaritan who entered the water to save a young girl from a dangerous rip current was swept underwater and later found dead.

The incident unfolded Friday evening in Myrtle Beach, where authorities launched an extensive search after the man disappeared beneath the water shortly after successfully getting the girl to safety.

Good Samaritan Rescued Girl From Rip Current

According to authorities, the emergency happened at approximately 7:53 p.m. Friday near 10th Avenue South. At the time, the beach’s lifeguards had already gone off duty, leaving beachgoers to respond when the girl became caught in the dangerous current.

The Good Samaritan entered the water and managed to reach the young girl and get her to safety. But after completing the rescue, he was apparently caught by the same powerful current.

Authorities said he was pulled underwater and disappeared, prompting an immediate emergency response.

Overnight Search Launched in Myrtle Beach

The Myrtle Beach Police Department and Myrtle Beach Fire Department responded to the scene and began searching for the missing swimmer.

Crews continued their efforts throughout the night as authorities worked to locate the man in the dark and potentially dangerous waters.

The search continued into Saturday morning.

Despite the rescue effort and hours of searching, authorities ultimately confirmed that the missing swimmer had died. His body was later found after washing ashore.

Authorities said the man’s body was recovered at approximately 1 p.m. Saturday.

The discovery brought a tragic end to a search that began after the man performed what witnesses and authorities described as a courageous rescue.
