Orlando, Florida — What began as a missing person investigation quickly turned into a homicide case after investigators made a horrifying discovery near an Orlando home.
Authorities say a 71-year-old man who had been reported missing was found dismembered inside three suitcases, leading to the arrest of his stepson on a charge of first-degree murder.
The case has shocked the local community, where neighbors described the victim as a kind man who was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Missing Person Investigation Led to Grim Discovery
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, Jorge Vazquez-Escutia, 71, was reported missing on August 4 after family members became concerned when they could not locate him.
Deputies responding to the family’s home reportedly found his cellphone, wallet, and keys still inside the residence. Investigators also noticed what appeared to be blood on an exterior fence, prompting a more extensive investigation.
As detectives gathered evidence, authorities said they uncovered information indicating that Vazquez-Escutia had been killed and that efforts had allegedly been made to conceal the crime.
Stepson Arrested on First-Degree Murder Charge
Authorities arrested Jose L. Proano, 44, the victim’s stepson, on a charge of first-degree murder.
According to the arrest affidavit, investigators interviewed Proano, who allegedly described having a strained relationship with Vazquez-Escutia and expressed resentment over believing the victim limited his access to his mother.
A witness also reportedly told deputies that Proano had been acting erratically and making threats before the investigation unfolded.
The allegations against Proano remain accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Surveillance Video and Cellphone Data Became Key Evidence
Investigators said surveillance footage captured a man wearing a black shirt and blue fanny pack climbing over the property’s rear wall.
According to the affidavit, the individual was later seen bringing several suitcases into the backyard, where investigators allege he placed human remains into one of the suitcases before leaving the property.
Later footage reportedly showed the same individual pulling two large black suitcases down the driveway.
Detectives also examined cellphone records, which they say placed Proano’s phone in the area at the same time the surveillance footage was recorded, strengthening the timeline outlined in the investigation.
Human Remains Found Inside Three Suitcases
After reviewing the evidence, investigators returned to an area near the victim’s home later that day.
There, authorities discovered three suitcases containing human remains, which investigators identified as belonging to Jorge Vazquez-Escutia.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said the evidence indicates the victim was allegedly killed, dismembered, and placed inside the suitcases in an attempt to conceal the crime.
Officials added that there are no outstanding suspects and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Neighbors Remember Victim as a Helpful Community Member
News of Vazquez-Escutia’s death has left neighbors stunned.
One longtime resident said the 71-year-old had lived in the neighborhood for nearly 20 years and was well known for helping people with yard work, lawn maintenance, and vehicle repairs.
Residents described him as someone who was always willing to assist others, making the tragic outcome even more difficult for the community to process.
