House Springs, Missouri — A Missouri community is mourning the loss of a mother and daughter after authorities say a dispute over a noise complaint ended in a deadly shooting outside their home.
Investigators allege that 73-year-old Robert Winkelman confronted his neighbors before fatally shooting Jessica Lashly, 38, and her 17-year-old daughter, Jersey Greer, in an attack that devastated the family and shocked the neighborhood.
Confrontation Outside Home Turned Deadly
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 25 outside the family’s home in House Springs.
Investigators said Winkelman walked to the residence to complain about activities taking place at the home. During the confrontation, authorities allege he became angry after Lashly made a comment.
Police say Winkelman then pulled out a handgun and shot Jessica Lashly in the head.
Moments later, Jersey Greer rushed to help her injured mother, but investigators say the gunman also shot the teenager in the head as she attempted to provide first aid.
Twin Sister Calls Jersey’s Final Act Heroic
Jersey’s twin sister, Justice Greer, was at work when the shooting occurred. Speaking afterward, she said her mother and sister had just returned home when the confrontation began.
Remembering her sister’s final moments, Justice said Jersey’s instinct was to help.
“Jersey’s last moments, she was trying to save my mom.”
Justice added that her sister’s bravery continues to inspire her and that she hopes she can one day show the same courage. Authorities also said Winkelman allegedly chased a third person at the home, although no additional shots were fired.
Suspect Shot Himself as Deputies Arrived
When deputies responded to the scene, they found Winkelman and attempted to take him into custody. According to investigators, the suspect then turned the gun on himself, suffering a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Lashly, Greer, and Winkelman were all transported to local hospitals in critical condition. Jessica Lashly and Jersey Greer died two days later, on July 27, according to their family.
Following the shooting, prosecutors obtained a no-bond arrest warrant charging Winkelman with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.
However, authorities later confirmed that Winkelman died from his injuries, meaning the criminal case could not proceed to trial.
Family Remembers Mother and Daughter
In a shared obituary, family members described the close bond between Jessica and Jersey.
They wrote that their love as mother and daughter would remain in the hearts of everyone who knew them, despite their lives ending far too soon.
Friends also revealed that Jersey became an organ donor, and her donations helped six people across the country receive lifesaving transplants.
They said knowing that three children and three adults were given another chance at life has brought the family some comfort during an unimaginable loss.
Teen Remembered for Kindness and Big Dreams
Jersey was preparing to begin her senior year at Northwest High School, where she played lacrosse alongside her twin sister. According to loved ones, she dreamed of continuing the sport in college with Justice.
Friends and teammates remembered her as someone who made people laugh, lifted others up, and showed compassion to everyone around her.
A fundraiser organized by her lacrosse community described Jersey as a bright, caring teammate whose kindness touched everyone she met, while the community continues to rally around the grieving family.
