Paragould, Arkansas — What police say began as a verbal argument between a husband and wife ended in a frightening rollover crash that placed an entire family in danger. Authorities allege that an Arkansas man grabbed the steering wheel while his wife was driving, sending the family’s vehicle off the road with their three children still inside.
The incident has resulted in multiple felony charges as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Police Say Argument Escalated While Family Was Driving
According to investigators, the crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Walcott and Spring Grove roads in Paragould, a city in northeastern Arkansas.
Police identified the suspect as Matthew Jones, 37. Authorities said Jones was riding in the vehicle with his wife and their three children while his wife was driving.
Investigators believe an argument between the couple escalated during the drive before Jones allegedly reached over and grabbed the steering wheel.
The vehicle reportedly left the roadway, struck a culvert, and overturned.
Family Escapes Serious Injuries
Despite the violent crash, all five family members were able to get out of the overturned vehicle without suffering life-threatening injuries.
Authorities noted that Jones appeared to have sustained a cut to his forehead, which was visible after the crash.
Emergency responders treated those involved at the scene, and police began interviewing the family to determine what caused the vehicle to overturn.
Husband Allegedly Admitted Touching the Steering Wheel
According to the arrest affidavit, an officer asked the family what had happened immediately after the crash. Investigators said Jones’ wife looked toward him and insisted that he explain what happened.
Police reported that Jones admitted he “messed with the steering wheel,” but claimed he did not do it intentionally.
According to the affidavit, Jones told the responding officer:
“We were bickering.”
His wife, however, reportedly told investigators that Jones caused the crash by pulling on the steering wheel while she was driving.
Authorities relied on those statements as part of the investigation that led to his arrest.
Multiple Criminal Charges Filed
Following the investigation at the scene, officers arrested Jones and transported him to the Greene County Jail. According to jail records, he has been charged with:
- One count of aggravated assault on a family member
- Three counts of endangering the welfare of children
As of the latest available information, Jones remained in custody, and court records had not yet listed his next court appearance.
The allegations against him have not yet been tested in court, and the case remains pending.
Investigation Continues
Authorities have not released additional details regarding what led to the argument or whether any further charges could be filed as the investigation progresses.
While no one was seriously hurt, investigators say the incident highlights how quickly a family dispute inside a moving vehicle can create a dangerous situation for everyone on board—especially young children.
