Coralville, Iowa — Nearly three years after a 29-year-old Iowa man disappeared without a trace, his family has finally received the answers they had long hoped for—but not the outcome they wanted. Authorities have confirmed that human remains discovered near a middle school last month belong to Grant Leonard, who was reported missing in 2023.
Police say the investigation into his death is still ongoing.
Police Identify Remains Through Dental Records
The Coralville Police Department announced on Monday, Aug. 3, that forensic investigators identified the remains through a comparison of dental records connected to an existing missing person case.
Officials confirmed the remains belonged to Grant Leonard, who was 29 years old when he disappeared from the Holiday Road area on Oct. 23, 2023.
In a statement, Police Chief Kyle Nicholson acknowledged the heartbreaking outcome for Leonard’s loved ones.
He said authorities were grateful they could finally provide the family with answers but recognized that this was not the ending anyone had hoped for.
The department also asked the public and media to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
Human Bones Were Discovered Near Middle School
The investigation took a significant turn on July 8, when officers recovered multiple human bones near Northwest Middle School in Coralville.
According to investigators, the remains were found in the 1700 block of 8th Street.
Police secured a wooded area along with part of a nearby creek or drainage culvert while crime scene investigators carefully examined the location and collected evidence.
Authorities have not disclosed who discovered the remains or whether additional evidence was recovered at the scene.
Cause of Death Has Not Been Released
Although Leonard’s identity has now been confirmed, investigators have not announced a cause or manner of death.
Police emphasized that the investigation remains active, and officials have not indicated whether foul play is suspected or if any other circumstances may have contributed to his death.
Authorities have also not released information about where Leonard had been during the nearly three years between his disappearance and the discovery of his remains.
As detectives continue examining evidence, they have not provided a timeline for when additional findings may become public.
Family Remembers Grant Leonard
Following confirmation of his death, Leonard’s family shared a heartfelt tribute in his obituary.
They remembered him for his infectious smile, creative spirit, and unique sense of humor, saying his memorable phrases continue to bring laughter to those who loved him.
His family also reflected on his passions, including skateboarding, music, and collecting unique items, which they said reflected his vibrant personality.
In addition, they expressed sincere appreciation to the Coralville Police Department and everyone who helped search for Grant during the years he was missing.
The obituary concluded by noting that Grant is survived by his loving family, who continue to miss him deeply as they begin the difficult process of grieving after finally learning what happened to their loved one.
As investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding Leonard’s death, authorities have asked anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.
