Louisville, Kentucky — An 8-year-old Kentucky girl managed to escape an alleged kidnapping attempt by running into her home and locking the door behind her, according to police. Investigators say the woman accused of chasing the child later claimed she was trying to “save” her because she believed the girl’s mother was not actually her parent.
The frightening encounter has left neighbors shaken as authorities continue investigating the incident.
Police Say Woman Approached Child in Neighborhood
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, 42-year-old Charra Lewis was arrested on Saturday and charged with kidnapping a minor and burglary.
The investigation began after a family in Louisville’s Portland neighborhood flagged down police officers and reported that a woman had allegedly attempted to abduct an 8-year-old girl.
Officers spoke with the child, who told investigators that Lewis approached her and asked whether she needed help finding her mother.
Police said Lewis also offered the girl an unidentified item, although investigators have not disclosed what it was.
Girl Escaped by Running Into Her Home
According to court documents, the child became frightened and ran toward her home after the encounter. Police allege that Lewis chased the girl and attempted to restrain her before the child successfully made it inside the residence.
The girl then locked the front door, preventing Lewis from entering. Investigators said the child was not physically harmed during the incident.
Suspect Allegedly Tried to Force Entry
After the girl reached safety, police say Lewis allegedly attempted to get inside the home.
According to investigators, she used a metal garden pole in an attempt to force open the door, damaging a window screen during the incident.
Officers responding to the area quickly located Lewis and took her into custody. Authorities have not reported any injuries resulting from the alleged break-in attempt.
Suspect Told Officers She Wanted to ‘Save’ the Child
When questioned by police, Lewis reportedly gave an unusual explanation for her actions.
According to investigators, she claimed she had been trying to “save” the girl because she believed the child’s mother was not actually her mother.
Police did not indicate that there was any evidence supporting that belief.
The allegations against Lewis remain unproven, and the case will proceed through the court system.
Suspect Remains in Custody
Lewis was booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections following her arrest. She was scheduled to appear in court for an arraignment on Monday, but the hearing was canceled.
According to local reports, officials said Lewis was not cooperating with staff at the correctional facility. As of the latest available information, a new court date has not been scheduled, and bond information has not been released.
The investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare to move forward with the case.
