Darby Township, Pennsylvania — Police are searching for a gunman after an innocent Walmart employee was shot during an apparent dispute between two men inside a Pennsylvania store Friday evening. Authorities say the employee was caught in the crossfire after one of the men allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired a shot inside the busy retail store.

The investigation remains active as detectives work to identify and locate the suspect.

Argument at Self-Checkout Turns Violent

According to the Darby Township Police Department, officers responded to the Walmart at 50 McDade Boulevard shortly after 7 p.m. Friday following reports of gunfire inside the store.

Police Chief Michael Sousa said investigators believe two men became involved in a verbal altercation near the self-checkout area before the confrontation escalated.

As detectives reconstructed the incident, they determined that one of the men allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired a shot during the argument.

Instead of striking the person involved in the dispute, the bullet hit a female Walmart employee in the leg, making her an unintended victim of the violence.

Employee Was Not Involved in the Dispute

Authorities emphasized that the injured Walmart employee was not one of the individuals involved in the confrontation.

Chief Sousa said the available evidence indicates the shot was fired indiscriminately, and the employee happened to be in the line of fire.

“One of the males brandishes a firearm, fires a round indiscriminately and hits one of the female Walmart employees in the leg — not the subject he was arguing with,” Sousa said.

Emergency responders transported the employee to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police have not released an update on her medical condition, and her identity has not been made public.

Suspect Escaped Before Officers Arrived

By the time officers reached the Walmart, the suspected shooter had already fled the scene. Authorities have not released a description of the suspect or disclosed what may have sparked the confrontation.

Detectives are now reviewing store surveillance footage and other available evidence to identify the individual responsible for the shooting.

Investigators are also working to determine whether the two men knew each other before the incident.

Police Say No Ongoing Threat to Community

Although the suspect remains at large, police said there is no ongoing threat to the public related to the incident. After responding to the shooting, officers cleared the Walmart and nearby businesses to ensure there were no additional safety concerns.

Chief Sousa said investigators believe the shooting was an isolated incident connected to the dispute rather than a random attack targeting shoppers.

The store was secured while detectives processed the scene and collected evidence.

Investigation Continues

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting or the identity of the suspect to contact investigators. Authorities have not announced any arrests, and no charges have been filed as the search continues.

Officials say surveillance video and witness interviews will play an important role in determining exactly what happened inside the Walmart and in locating the person responsible.

The investigation remains ongoing.
