Chino Hills, California — A late-night police pursuit in Southern California ended in tragedy after authorities said a kidnapping suspect fatally shot a man locked inside the trunk of a vehicle just as deputies surrounded the car. The shocking sequence unfolded within moments of the suspect stepping out of the vehicle, leaving both the alleged kidnapper and the victim dead at the scene.
Reports of Gunfire Led Deputies to the Scene
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the incident began at approximately 10:14 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, when deputies responded to reports of gunfire and someone screaming near the 2100 block of Monteverde Drive in Chino Hills.
While heading to the scene, deputies spotted a vehicle matching information connected to the call traveling at a high rate of speed.
Authorities attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to pull over, triggering a brief pursuit through the neighborhood.
Officials later said deputies did not yet know a kidnapping had allegedly occurred when the chase began.
Pursuit Ended in Deadly Confrontation
The pursuit came to an end on Wandering Ridge Drive, where deputies surrounded the vehicle and ordered its occupants to exit. According to investigators, the passenger complied immediately and was taken into custody without incident.
The driver, however, refused repeated commands from deputies.
Authorities said the suspect eventually stepped out of the vehicle, walked toward the open trunk, and fired a gun into the trunk, where an individual was later discovered.
Moments later, a deputy-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was struck by gunfire.
Kidnapped Victim Found Inside Trunk
After securing the scene, deputies opened the trunk and discovered an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators believe the suspect shot the victim while deputies were surrounding the vehicle. Law enforcement officers immediately began lifesaving efforts on both the victim and the suspect.
Despite those efforts, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities later determined that the victim had been kidnapped from the Monteverde Drive residence before the pursuit began.
Investigation Continues Into Motive
Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Orejel described the case as deeply disturbing, confirming that investigators believe the victim was abducted before being transported in the trunk of the vehicle.
Officials have not disclosed what led to the kidnapping or shooting, and investigators have not released information about any relationship between the suspect, the victim, or the passenger.
The passenger remained unharmed and was taken into custody as detectives continued investigating the case.
Authorities Expect More Information
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said no deputies were injured during the incident.
Investigators continue processing evidence and interviewing witnesses to determine what happened before officers arrived.
Authorities have indicated that additional information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses, but have not yet announced any further details regarding possible motives or charges involving the passenger.
