Keizer, Oregon — An Oregon woman accused of killing her chronically ill husband has been arrested after nearly two weeks on the run, while emotional comments from the couple’s daughter defending her mother have fueled debate over end-of-life care and the difficult decisions families sometimes face when a loved one is seriously ill.
Wife Arrested After Husband Found Dead
Authorities say 56-year-old Shelly Peca has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of her husband, 59-year-old Walter Peca.
Walter Peca was found dead inside the couple’s Keizer, Oregon, home on July 17. Investigators later identified Shelly Peca as the primary suspect and launched a search after she could not be located.
On Tuesday, law enforcement officers found her in a remote area of Chelan County, Washington, along a U.S. Forest Service road. She is now awaiting extradition back to Oregon to face the charge.
Officials have not publicly released Walter Peca’s cause of death or disclosed additional details about the investigation.
Daughter Defends Mother in Emotional Social Media Posts
As news of the arrest spread, comments attributed to the couple’s daughter, Summer Peca, drew widespread attention online.
Responding to a Facebook post about her father’s death, she wrote that she and her siblings loved both parents and expressed hope that authorities would “never find” her mother.
Summer also described her parents’ decades-long relationship, saying her mother loved her father deeply and that they had been together since Shelly was 17 years old.
According to the posts, Walter Peca had struggled with serious health issues for more than 30 years, and Summer claimed that medical treatments and medications had gradually worsened his condition.
She described watching her father lose his independence while living in constant pain, suggesting that few people could understand what the family had experienced.
Authorities have not confirmed or commented on the claims made in the social media posts.
Neighbors Say Family’s Situation Was Shocking
Neighbors told local media they were surprised by the allegations because the couple had always appeared friendly and kind. One neighbor said people were heard arguing at the home before Walter Peca’s body was discovered.
Another neighbor said Walter’s health had noticeably declined in the weeks before his death and that he had reportedly been hospitalized at least twice.
Those who knew the family described the situation as heartbreaking, saying they had no indication events would end in a criminal investigation.

Case Renews Debate Over End-of-Life Decisions
The daughter’s online statements have prompted renewed discussion about Oregon’s Death with Dignity Act, which allows certain terminally ill adults who meet strict legal requirements to request and self-administer physician-prescribed medication to end their lives.
The law operates under specific legal safeguards and does not authorize another person to intentionally cause a patient’s death.
One neighbor said she could understand why the daughter might feel conflicted, expressing hope that the family can eventually heal regardless of the outcome of the criminal case.
Meanwhile, prosecutors continue pursuing the murder case as investigators work to determine exactly what happened inside the Peca home before Walter Peca’s death.
