Florida’s East Coast — A massive 1,400-pound great white shark named Breton is drawing attention from marine scientists after taking an unexpected summer route that goes against the typical migration pattern for his species.
While most great white sharks head north toward the cooler waters of Cape Cod and Atlantic Canada during the summer months, Breton has remained off Florida’s east coast, leaving researchers eager to understand what is driving his unusual journey.
The shark’s latest movements, tracked through OCEARCH’s Global Shark Tracker, have sparked fresh questions about how and why great white sharks choose their seasonal migration routes.
Breton’s Summer Route Is Breaking the Usual Pattern
Breton has been monitored by OCEARCH since September 2020, when researchers tagged the adult male shark near Scatarie Island, Nova Scotia.
Since then, scientists have followed his long-distance travels using satellite tracking technology.
However, Breton’s most recent location has surprised researchers. Instead of joining other tagged great white sharks farther north, the enormous predator has continued swimming along Florida’s Atlantic coastline, an area where relatively few great white sharks spend the peak of summer.
The unexpected detour has made Breton one of the most closely watched sharks in OCEARCH’s tracking program.
Warm Water Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Unsafe Conditions
One of Breton’s latest satellite pings recorded a sea surface temperature of approximately 87 degrees, far warmer than conditions typically associated with great white sharks.
Even so, scientists say the surface temperature tells only part of the story.
“Warm surface water doesn’t necessarily mean unsuitable habitat,” OCEARCH Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski said. “Breton likely has access to much cooler water at depth.”
According to Tyminski, great white sharks regularly make deep dives that can reach hundreds of meters below the surface, allowing them to access much cooler temperatures even when surface waters are unusually warm.
That ability gives sharks like Breton greater flexibility than many people realize when choosing where to travel.
Scientists Believe Food May Be Driving the Journey
Although researchers cannot say with certainty why Breton has remained near Florida, they believe food availability could be the biggest factor.
Scientists suspect the shark may be following large schools of pelagic fish, which often travel through waters off Florida’s Atlantic coast during this time of year.
Rather than following a fixed migration schedule, predators frequently adjust their movements based on where prey is most abundant.
Breton’s behavior serves as another reminder that wildlife does not always follow predictable patterns.
Breton Continues Teaching Scientists About Great White Sharks
Researchers say every satellite ping from Breton provides valuable information that improves understanding of one of the ocean’s most iconic predators.
His unusual route demonstrates that great white shark migration is far more complex than scientists once believed, with environmental conditions, prey availability and individual behavior all likely influencing where these animals travel.
“Sharks don’t always follow the rulebook,” Tyminski said. “Breton’s unexpected journey reminds us that the factors driving white shark movements are complex, and we’re still uncovering the secrets behind these remarkable migrations.”
